Know i Know that this is a skaven forum, but this has been bugging me.

How do the dwarf guilds actually work?

Do clans swear themselves to eg: The Weapon smiths guild, or do individuals in the clans swaer themselves to guilds. And if so, who do they owe ultimatle loyalty to? The guild, or there clan?

A guild is effectively a gathering of one particular profession. If you want to work in that profession than you join the guild.

The closest modern comparison I can draw in that on unions. But think of it like a union that if you don't join no one will employ you and if people find out your working anyway the union will send someone round to beat you up and break your legs.

So a mafia union. :P

A Dwarf would join a guild upon deciding upon what profession he wanted to go into. Admission to the guild would be automatic upon starting in that profession (though most dwarfs would start out as apprentices) and an individual would remain a member of that guild for as long as he stayed in that profession. As for loyalty for a dwarf you are simply loyal to multiple groups. A situation where a dwarfs loyalty comes into conflict would probably be resolved by either the intervention of a higher force within the hold (say the king or his family) however such situation are probably very rare. I however do think that many slayers could end up becoming slayers due to a case of having to fail one to aid the other. An example would be a dwarf who swore to smelt 100 swords for his guild but ends up needing to use all the metal he has to make stuff to defend his clan. If he doesn’t find some extra metal quickly or none within the guild says "O take an extra week on that 100 swords” he could well go and become a slayer out of guilt from failing his guild masters and breaking his oath despite the fact that it was all beyond his control.

Dwarfs are crazy like that. :P

So with regards to guildmasters, who do they work for, the guild, or the clans?
Were do they live, the guildhall, or the clan hall?
And, is a guildmaster of higher standing than a thane?

They work for the guild. No one actually works for clans. Dwarf clans are different from Skaven ones. Skaven clans are simply a collection of anyone that the warlord can bully/blackmail/bribe into working for him. Dwarf clans are more like a massive extended family.

The guild master probably lives in his own house. I would guess that guild master is not a full time job but more of a position held by the oldest and wisest member of the guild.

As for comparing guild masters to Thanes you’re making the mistake of assuming they match up. It’s an entirely different system. Likely each would be deferred to in the case of his speciality. So you don't ask the guild master how to attack the goblin fort and you don't ask the Thane how the mining tools are manufactured. Keep in mind that dwarfs are insanely proud so it’s unlikely that an established hierarchy exists beyond.

High king
Hold king
Prince
Everyone else.
