My group use plain ol' hills, rivers, obstacles and buildings, always roll for forests and use half the Mystical Monuments, so we use some of the new stuff, but not much. The magical terrain makes things interesting at times, but a Sorcerous Portal in the center of the board blasting you with a spell can make well executed tactics fall right apart.

Probably the genius who realized that up until this edition, all the fun of the game could be totally sucked out with the placement of just a few pieces of terrain. Instead of dynamic, action-filled games full of risk, movement and excitement, we had more 'realistic', yet highly yawn inducing bore-fests (or games with almost no terrain, which meant aesthetic death).

The new way may not be all the realistic, but man, it sure makes for a better game.

We do not use the terrain rules. The fact that terrain basically has no effect on movement (other then marching) is unrealistic.

We have terrain rules for various types of terrain and all terrain disrupts.

It is unfortunate they (GW) seem to be dumbing down fantasy, which fantasy was already almost too simplistic anyway. Terrain should have a major impact on maneuver, fast avenues of approach, how units/armies fight and LOS.

Generally speaking true LOS is asinine. Unless you live somewhere that trees are planted in nice neat rows, you wont be seeing though a forest. At least not here, or any "forest" I have ever been in. Nor should it be easy to move through rough terrain.

While 8th ed is by far the best edition GW has managed to write, they tripped and fell just short of the finish line with terrain and magic.

On a side note: Good Job on the last 2 army books written! Give you hope they (GW rules/book writers) are pulling their heads out of their tail sections.
Any army is beatable ...Therefore, It is not the Army you must fear...But their General.

Some of the guys at my club likes when there are more differances in the game than usual, and some of the others don't like to play them for variuos reasons I haven't really put the finger on.

Myself, I like to try different things and I think magical terrain adds some flavour to some games. I remember that I took some pictures of a basic landscape with sheeps in it and some ruins. I dream of one day to put those together on top of a table and use it in most of my games.

One thing we have done to help with moving into/out of forests is to treat all forests as being surrounded by the "hedge" barrier, which makes sense since there typically are alot of folliage around forest edges, but less so in the middle of a forest.

Playing skaven to minimize randomness is like going to prom with your sister, you can do it if you really want, but in the end everyone will still laugh even if you do get lucky.

I always take at least one Warpfire Thrower. You can't always rely on your opponent to do massive damage to your troops. Sometimes, you just have to do a job yourself.

My group uses them, but we often forget about their effects in the heat of battle.
Ha! That describes us pretty well, too.

I think the new terrain rules (along with the scenario rules) are _vital_ in balancing the game.

The lack of predictability they engender causes a lot of builds for various armies to not be fielded.

Plus, they make the game so much more fun.

I can't imagine I'd want to play a game without them.
Agreed 100%. The only problem with the terrain is the background. The actual rules are surprisingly well balanced.

I use them, the only things we change is if we roll up something stupid like a good monument as part of an evil settlement or similar.
