My blade shall cause your death

The title really says it all. Do you like the new terrain rules or do you think they are stupid. Does anyone use these apart from when you are forced to? I personally hate the new rules as they are really unrealistic and ridiculous in some cases. Would every river be made of blood or every forest magic? Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I do not believe it has. |

My group uses them, but we often forget about their effects in the heat of battle. I don't mind them as we generally all play the same armies all the time and it brings a bit of variation to the table. It can also be incredibly fun. Well, for me at least, since I'm the best sport having gotten used to skaven's...unpredictability, so things like the sorcerer's portal shooting fireballs at my slaves is hilarious to me. We've had games where the entire match was won or lost based on scenery (on two occasions I think, arguably a third), which you could say is stupid, but it adds an additional element of strategy I think.Half the battle of being a commander is being able to use the terrain to your advantage. |

I think it is more randomness which for skaven is fine but no other army should kill itself. Also, surely you would be able to see a river before you step in it. To be fair it does not effect us much but I think it does effect other armies to much. Chaos warriors can be hit hard by the river. It wounds on 4+ and ignores armour. It does seem a little stupid still. I agree it is fun when it goes with you but having a strength 10 lord on the charge is not fun. |

My friends and I will create a nice looking battle scene usually having to do with the entrance to a small town. We have a lot of trees, fences, sign posts, small buildings, etc. After the scene is built, will will decide if any of the terrain is magical. Maybe a well or a tower will have special effects. We might end up making one of the forests a mysterious forest. In the end the way the field looks is much more important than the magical possibilities of a randomly generated scene. |

Why U do dis?!

We tend towards mystical buildings and such, but not the forests and such.... I can imagine there being lots of slightly mystical landmarks that when a wizard isn't on the board, there isnt enough winds of magic to produce the huge effects there are |

I like the buildings and some of the special things like arcane monuments and such, but I'm not a fan of the rules for water, forests, etc. I do think it's funny that if you use the Mysterious Terrain like the book apparantly wants you to, there is a 1 in 6 chance that any forest WON"T try to kill you! |

I use the random terrain any chance I can get. A few folks in my gaming group don't like it so we end up skipping it in their battles, but it certainly adds a lot more flair. Rivers and Forests are pretty deadly and I'm fine with that. I always think of it as a gamble to move through the woods to get an advantage (LoS at least) on the opponent, so it shouldn't be without it's own risks. Same with rivers, you can charge across a river but not march, it doesn't make much sense to me, so having the river be perilous instead of the rules is just as good a choice in my eyes. And all the buildings are lots of fun too! It's just random fun. The game is for fun though so if you don't like em, don't use em. It's nice to have the option though

I hate the new terrain system, i useally put terrain as i want myself, with my oppenent of course. As for the rules, i find it very unrealistic, if you enter a LOO-LIKE-NORMAL, forest, you roll a dice, and it magically transforms into a very scary forest. This is redilous. I find custom rules no problem, if we can all choose to use 'm, in the fluff of a bttle or something. like eg. a Goblin battle with a Idol of Mork or Gork, a elf battle with a waystone. And other stuff. |

I have heard a lot of people are unhappy about the new terrain rules. My gaming groups refuses to use them as they unbalance the rules greatly. Occasionally we use some but that is very rare. It is ridiculous WillQueek and I have to agree with the points you made about it. Custom rules are good but as I said, not too often. |

I think pretty much everyone has said what needs to be said. Terrain can greatly unbalance a game, but it can also provide an interesting additional tactical aspect. You can view this as a detriment to fair game play, or laugh when your troops blow up. I would suggest that if you're not as big a fan of blowing up your own dudes up as we are, you talk to your opponent to see if you can re-roll something that is game-ending. Communication is really the key to having fun in this game anyway. |

I like the rules adds a bit more unpredictability. Deciding whether to risk going through a magic wood or not etc. Did get annoyed when Portal was getting rolled every game for a month, the one magic building i can't stand

In my area we also use a modified way of fielding special terrain. Monuments, arcane structures, hills and obstacles. For example if it looks like a tower of blood, why bother rolling what kind of terrain it is. We also try keeping a little theme in our battle field i mean blessed bulwarks and an altar of khaine on the same table would be absurd. While a Sphinx and khemeri quicksand go together perfect :-). We also made an alternative chart for forests, on a 4+ it's a special forest and then you roll for what kind of forest it is. Else like some of you have mentioned every thing on the table would be magical/mystical . Flem, |

We still use dominately magical terrain but theme our boards (kinda like the old themed terrain lists that the old rulebooks had). |

Ha! That describes us pretty well, too. I think the new terrain rules (along with the scenario rules) are _vital_ in balancing the game. The lack of predictability they engender causes a lot of builds for various armies to not be fielded. Plus, they make the game so much more fun. I can't imagine I'd want to play a game without them. |

I've enjoyed them too. Adds some variety, and the fact that they are part of the rules now means coming up with your own for more narrative focus battles doesn't lead to raised eyebrows and objections. |
