Ok, I've been playing fantasy for a long time as lizards and fancied a change so here i come before the council offering my services and inside info on the dino's ![]() At my local GW quite a few guys play skaven, but they all seem to play Queek and lots of Stormvermin, clanrats and doomwheels galore. Having preused the skaven model range i've come to the conclusion that i want to do a Plague heavy list, i think they are the best looking troop models skaven have and of course with a certain someone they become troop choice. My aim is to stick closely to the Plague theme of the army. Please be gentle as i've never played skaven let alone built a list for them. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Without further or do then: Lords: Lord Vaskin, Prophet Of The Decay (Lord Skrolk) Heros: Vermidrak Plague Tail (Level 2 Plague Priest) -Plague Furnace -Ironcurse Icon -Warp Token -Flail -Foul Pendant Thanzel Green Eye (Level 1 Warlock Engineer) -Warp Condenser -Dispel Scroll Vescorn Long Tooth (Chieftan) -BSB Core: The Bubonic Malevolence (35 Plague Monks) -Full Command *join/push the Furnace The Vile Contaminants (39 Plague Monks) -Full Command -Plague Banner *Lord Vaskin joins this lot The Vos'sel (38 Stormvermin) -Full Command -Whaling or Storm Banner depending on opponent -Poisoned Wind Mortar Weapons Team *Thanzel and Vescorn join this lot The Hordes Of The Decay 35 Slaves -musician 35 Slaves -musician Special: The Sniktel (10 Gutter Runners) -Warp Grinder Weapons Team The Boiling Curse (6 Rat Ogres) -2 Packmasters -1 Master Moulder The Covenant Of Decay (10 Plague Censer Bearers) Rare: The Infector (Plagueclaw Catapault) The Outbreak (Plagueclaw Catapault) Total- i make it 3000 points All Comments and opinions welcome. Same comments that go for most first-time list writers, you need more bodies on the table. I can understand the attraction of only fielding plague monks in your core, but they don't have a save, so they're going to die quickly, but you need at least some slaves in there. Your best tactic would be to find a few hundred points somewhere, put them into slaves, then have the slaves tarpit enemy units then flank with the plague monks. Also, the warp grinder is a waste of points on gutter runners due to the Sneaky Infiltrator's rule. |

As far as theme goes, there's nothing in the background indicating that Clan Pestilens doesn't have Clanrats or Skavenslaves. Plague Monks are exclusive to Clan Pestilens, but there's no reason to think that every member of the clan becomes a monk, priest, or censer bearer. Those are just the elites. Think of the Middle Ages, where around 10% of the population of Western Europe was in the clergy, but most people were peasants, with a few artisans and a very small noble class. Religion was central to everyday life, and everyone around was still more or less devoutly Catholic--Jews were expelled; Muslims kept away on penalty of death; atheists were burned at the stake--but Medieval people weren't all clergy. So it's perfectly thematic to have Clanrats and Skavenslaves in Clan Pestilens colors. And it makes for a more competitive game. |

Thanks for your comments, I fully understand that plague have slaves and clanrats in their ranks, i intentionally wanted to field an army that had nothing but monks based on the fluff i'm writing to go with the list. The reason is in my fluff without going into too much detail, Vaskin looks upon them with distain after in his eyes he was betrayed by his slave and clanrat hordes during an inter-clan war which nearly ripped the clan into extinction. Due to this Vaskin shows faith only in his ever loyal plague monks. The stormvermin are trusted as they are Thanzels personal bodyguard, chosen in main on account of their extreme fasination with warp stone, though not as extreme as Thanzels. Having said that i'm thinking of dropping the doomwheel in favour of 2 units of 35 slaves with musician in each. I've edited the list above to reflect this. What do you guys think? Yours aye Mixer |

Mixer, I get your logic, though I'm not sure that a Skaven would have faith in anyone, and particularly not in Plague Monks (there's no reason to think that Skaven clergy are more high-minded than the human variety). Given that in Skaven society everyone really is out to get you, paranoia is absolutely necessary for the survival of any Skaven. Personally, I've never tried to play Skaven as an elite army, so I guess I can't say that it won't work. But I would have concerns: this is definitely not the toughest 3000 point Skaven force you can take, and I suspect that it would have trouble facing a more competitively-designed army. One thing you might want to consider is creating a cut-down version of your list and getting in some practice games at 1500-2000 points before you build all the way up to 3000. That said, adding in the two units of Skavenslaves is definitely an improvement. |

I'm not the best Skaven player in the world. I'm still pretty new, and still trying out different army styles, etc. But I do have a lot of experience in writing. The great thing about being limited by fluff that you're writing is that you can change the fluff. ![]() Keep the same history, but rather than limiting your list (and potentially your wins), simply act out your general's attitude towards the slaves and the clanrats. Use them as meat shields, abuse them, purposely put them into battles you know they will loose. After all, Lord Vaskin isn't exactly alone in his dislike of slaves. Pretty much all Skaven hate them, kill them, feed them to rat ogres or eat them themselves. Also, Skaven don't trust anyone. So, as you see, Lord Vaskin there is really much like any other Skaven lord in his attitude. Use your plague units, enjoy the fluff, but if you loose too many games, don't feel like your limited by your own story line! |

I like the theme and the list. Just a couple of suggestions on the list. You need to change your magic items on your Engineer. He has two arcane items at this point, so you'd have to drop one. Sticking with your theme, I suggest switching him for a Plague Priest. That way you can get the whole lore of plague, still have a dispel scroll caddy, and a better combat character to go in your combat unit. Get some decent protection on your BSB. Your going to want re-rolls on all those frenzy leadership checks for as long as you can. I'd also drop the warp-grinder, and split your gutter runners into units of 5 each. And of course give them poison slings. Drop the warptoken and get more slaves for those units. |
