Or of course you could just do something cunning like use a d8 (eight-sided die). :)

Or take one card from each magic lore, shuffle and the card drawn at random is the lore you get.

I think that's the easiest way to do it.. Roll a dice, pick the appropriate spell from each deck, and draw one (which can then be exchanged for the default spell if you prefer).

HAHAHa, I had this problem a long time ago. Eventually I had to break down and carry an 8 sided dice for my Warlord with a wizarding hat. I tried every-other method and they all seemed too clunky or confusing to my opponent.

For those of you debating about how to randomly generate one of the 8 lores of magic for the Wizard Hat, let me just say that you are all overthinking it WAY too much. The simplest solution is thus:

1. Roll 8 dice, one at a time, and allocate each Magic Lore to the roll (eg: "this is for Fire" *roll*, "this is for Heavens" *roll*, "this is for Shadow" *roll*, etc).

2. The highest dice roll wins, and that will be your chosen lore.

3. If there is more than one highest dice value, reroll the dice for each of the Lores that those dice corresponded to as per step 1. Eventually you'll get a dice that rolls highest, and that dice will be your Lore.

Easy. No maths, no coin flipping, just pure random dice rolling.

Ok guys, we have winner :D

.....Also just one more question....

Dwarfs, rune of Determination...
Does it mean that a Stubborn Dwarf unit with it is "unbreakable"? They only test for breaks on 1 dice and the LD will never drop below 8/9/10. Or is 6 always a failure?

I don't mind when I accidentally kill my own.  They were probably asking for it anyway.

I believe that a 6 is not a 12, and therefore they will not "always fail"... So unless there's an errata somewhere, I think that combination does indeed make them unbreakable.
8th Ed: 2-0-0
Last Game: 1500, Vampire Counts, Win - Tabled on Turn 5

Self-Detonations This Game: Warp Lightning Cannon (Turn 1), Ratling Gun (Turn 2), Vampire via miscast (Turn 4), Warlock Engineer via miscast (Turn 4), Poisoned Wind Mortar (Turn 4).

Note: Vampire's Miscast took 4 zombies, 1 skeleton, and 3 skavenslaves with him. Doomwheel did not die, but did wound itself on Turn 4.

Crikey you guys have come up with a lot of over-eloborate schemes for your D8s! Nice and Skaveny I give you, but here's how I do it.

In the rulebook, they list the 8 lores in a specific order. So, grab your rulebook, and use that order. Then, you roll a dice; on a 1-3 you have one of the first 4 Lores, on a 4-6 you have one of he second. Then you simply roll another dice, if you roll a 1/2/3/4 then you pick whichever one that is in the order, and re-roll 5/6 results.

E.g. you roll a 5 (second half), then a 2, this gives you the 6th Lore, which is Heavens. Simple!

...just need to figure out a way for a D7 that is not retarded now (for the "River of Light", if I have the misfortune of ever having to play on one again).

Buy a laptop/netbook.
Install MSExcel.
Bring it with you.
Write '=randbetween(1,7)' in a cell.
Hit enter.
