With the new WLC model coming out tomorrow, which i will begetting at least one. i just want to get some advice on using them. What units should be first priority, and how far away from the unit is the optimum position for causing the most damage?

Thanks

Hard to answer. You want to use them against the most threatening targets or against the things that they will be most effective against?

The problem with the WLC is the variable power on the shot. If you want to shoot at monsters with T5 or T6 then you want to put your initial shot at 10" from the back edge of the target and hope you roll high for the strength of the shot. This gives you the best chance of hitting the target at any strength and gives you about a 35% chance of wounding a T6 model (like a Steg).

If you want to be more effective with the Cannon itself (you have something else to deal with Monsters and this is just another tool in your anti-infantry toolkit) then you aim 10-12" short of the center of the unit which gives you the highest chance of placing the template smack in the middle of the unit of infantry (again at whatever strength is rolled) and more than half the time you're killing anything under the template on a 2+.

I usually aim about 8" from infantry units, but then, I have terriblee luck with my WLC.

WLCS are so random and unpredictable that it is really very hard to answer your question. For example: I am at 50 marauders and hit a unit of chaos knights, killing 10 of them.

I would go with rakashanis advice as far as target satuatiuon and messeurement goes.

Units a WLC a works especially well with:

Grey prophets. Most elite units are easily reduced to 14 or less by a full hit of a WLC, follow up with a (powerscrolled) 13th and you have a dead deathstar.

10 Stormvermin with ratling gun: Flyers and fast cavalery are the worst nightmare of the WLC. SV and ratling guns are a very nice methode to deal with this nuissance.

While deploying your WLCs always keep in mind the firing arch and the distance to your own units if you face an army that can field infiltrators etc.

WLC in a way are much LESS random than a normal cannon, because you can ignore the 2" and sometimes the 4" bounce.

bakfire

for monsters you just want to touch them with the bounce

over shoot at 2" (which is the minimum)+ 6" bounce (the minimum Str you are going to want to hurt them)+ 1.5" template is a total of 9.5"

so even if the over shoot was 10" there is only a 0.5" gap for the model to avoid being hit by the bounce / template

so with this in mind as long as you guess 9" before the target as long as you dont roll the misfire you should hit the model at some point on the bounce so the only thing you need to worry about is rolling a strength high enough to hurt it.....

(im really tired at the time of writing this so hopefully it makes sense... i will have to look at it again after some sleep)

For shooting units, there's more information in that thread too.

The only difference between my advice and bakfire's is that against monsters I put things a bit closer. If my cannon does not misfire I might as well have the chance of rolling a 6 to wound. It's unlikely but since you lose nothing as long as an initial 10 still lands on the base. That's why my advice is 10" from the back instead of 9" from the front (although those may be damned close to the same in a lot of conditions).

Still, because of the odds of Misfire and bad Str you're not high odds against a T6 Monster with the WLC. The key is to ask how you plan to use it and then recognize the difference in how you want to hit the target... Against a Monster you want the line to hit it and the template helps. Against infantry you want to hit with the template and the line is the bonus. It changes where you aim in relation to your target.

Statistically, the expected roll on an artillery die is a 5 so 5" on the carry and 5" more on the bounce. You can pretty much ignore misfires and you want to favor the higher strength slightly so you weight that a bit more and hope for 6" and 6" (which has the added benefit of accomodating the 10" and 2" combination as well to put the template where you want it).
