Can't you just move the Bell forward 1 inch, then back 1 inch, then forward 1 inch and then back 1 inch and so on?

You can't for normal moves (BRB pg26) so why would this be any different?

Interesting conversaton, thanks. As the original poster, sorry I did not weigh in again until just now - I am just getting over a really, really bad stomach flu.

So, the reason I prefered not to roll is, in fact, the desire to avoid the compulsary move. In my game, I had deployed the normal 12" in. My high elf opponent took the first turn and then marched his dragon knights + prince to the middle of the battlefield. In an attempt to avoid a charge, I moved the bell unit back 2.5" but then compulsarily moved 4" forward in my magic phase. This was just the amount he needed to get the charge on me.

My lessons learned was that I should have deployed touching the back edge of the table intead of 12" forward. Also, if I am that concerned, I could also deploy a unit in front of my bell unit, thus blocking the compulary move result.

On the related point that couldn't I move backward, again I still do not have my book handy, but doesn't the bell result say move "forward" 1d6"? If it doesn't, then it seems that maybe in fact one could move backward since it is my belief that moving backward is part of "normal" movement.

Regards,
~Jason

Interestingly, the bell does just say that the unit 'moves', no direction specified, so I guess you could shuffle it sideways or backwards (remembering to count the distance as double).
