What makes you think that this is so evil? As I recall (going from memory) it cannot jump back to a target already hit. How is this any nastier than, say, Plague?

the person play against fires it off near the beginning of the gae where my units are still really clse together and just seems to ruin my battle line, he does roll lucky though :)

I agree, Dwellers is infinitely more of a problem.

"Oh no! I've lost a statistical 3.5 Clanrats! But wait it gets worse! Now I've lost a statistical 3.5 Slaves too!"

It is pretty sore if it gets bounced onto a Doomwheel and Weapon Teams would be quite susceptible to it too but there really are much nastier spells and indeed lores out there and this should be the least of your worries.

Light does everything Heavens does only better.

I can see where Chain lightning can form a problem. If it goes off at the start of the game when your army is still together, it can destroy your weapon teams and seriously damage your warmachines/doomwheel.

If there is anything you might do about it is make sure your weapon teams, warmachines and doomwheels are more then 6 inch apart. So the chain has to hit another unit of slaves or CR before getting another one. Giving you more chance that the chain will stop.
Since it's a direct damage spell you could always try to block his line of sight with other units or scouts.

but there is stuff our there that is way nastier then any spell from the lore of heavens. stuff like dwellers below for example, that is just sheer horror for any rat. Lore of fire can also be devastating on our furry little behinds, i guess fur just burns well ;-).

Dwellers, pit of shades, purple sun, all these combined with the withering, or enfeeble

All these are far more deadly than anything coming from lore of heavens. (the worst of the 8 in my opinion)
