I know the shields wouldn't make much of a difference at all, but it would be the one time that they would make a difference that you'd have your Doomwheel in there with them. (Also, that way that if it did run away and die I'd know I'd done everything I could and it was simply a malicious plot on the part of the slaves! Torture and imaginative execution for all! Hooray!) They would also help against low strength missile fire that Slaves inevitably absorb. @Rodyle: Another good reason to have the Pawleader. Especially if you're going to be using Slaves as your mainstay unit instead of clanrats, which is very popular in this edition. And let's face it, how tight would you have to be to shirk spending four measly points for what may (not all that likely I know but still) be really quite useful. Sketch |

True. It will make the difference once in the so many cases. However, I'm a beta-dude, so the mathematician in disagrees with this just because the extra points you spend on the shields will on average be better spent elsewhere.
Yeah. I also plan on a few big units of slaves with backups of 30 clanrats (mostly for the weaponteams) as the main tarpits of my army. But even so, I don't know if I'm going to use pawleaders. I probably would I I planned on doing something nasty, such as taking an assassin in a slave unit, just to be cheap, or if I planned to take the unit outside of my leadership bubble, and put a chieftain in to keep the Leadership up. |

I run a block 5 wide and 10 deep of slaves without shields, and a block 10 wide and 6 deep of slaves with shields, though of course either unit can reform as the situation merits. No particular tactical reason; my old slaves without shields serve as slaves without shields. My old clanrats with shields are now slaves with shields, with the new Clanrat models being my Clanrats. I find both units perform admirably, and having both provides a bit of flexibility. In terms of absolute raw power, I'd say slaves without shields may be a bit better, but I think having some variety on the table more than makes up for that. Also, less models to buy/paint. |

@Rodyle: Although I do love my maths (my university course consists of almost nothing but physics) I'm still artistic and emotional enough to be rendered distraught and inconsolable and depressed by the thought my beautifally painted Doomwheel being forced to flee off the board for no other reason other than that my stupid slaves couldn't stay alive long enough to keep it in the fight. (The sheer imaginative scope of the ensuing executions would be the talk of Skavenblight for weeks. "And did you see when..." "And then when he was upside down..." "I didn't even know that..." I'm sure that the maths says they are more efficient without shields but considering a fifty strong unit without shields, you'd still need to play six games to make up the loss of a Doomwheel. Actually now that I look at it like that it doesn't seem so bad afterall. Maybe I will run them without shields. Ha! Sketch |

... If you are loosing that many slaves that the DW won't make up enough CR, why are you charging the DW in in the first place? Let it stand next to the other unit, out of it's front arc so they can't overrun into it, and let the lightning fly! Pivot around so that when the slaves break and the target pursues or overruns, you can charge their rear next round. Shoot them to death with your WLC, WFT, Jezzails, Catapult, or whatever else you have. Just because you can charge a flank, doesn't mean you must. Unless you have Frenzy... |
