Under the "Expendable" rule, it states Skaven can target units engaged in combat with Skavenslaves with "ranged attacks".

I have always played this as shooting attacks only (i.e., no magic whatsoever), is this correct?

This is a recurring question.

Ok, sorry... didn't see any topics addressing it in my quick "Rules Discussion" browsing and am new to Skaven.

Do you mind telling me what the consensus on this is? :-)

As far as I recall, there wasn't one.
Some people figure ranged attacks=shooting attacks. Others figure that a ranged attack is any attack coming from a range greater than 0", which would include spells coming from a distance.
Safe bet is to plan to discuss it with your opponent before it comes up.

Waaaaaitaminnit!

This is even a debate? How?

Ranged. Not in contact. Done.

How does ranged mean _only_ shooting attacks?

Crazy.

I think the majority would agree with sleboda on this one (me emphatically included). Your opponent may have a differing opinion, especially when he finds it is in his best interest to argue that ranged attack = shooting attack and nothing else. Then if we claim he is arguing due to bias, he'll turn around and say that us claiming ranged attack = anything that happens at range > 0 to be bias on our behalf too. Best to sideline potential opponents with this question before they see the potential outcomes of their verdict to further ensure an unbiased opinion :P

Weapon descriptions have a range on them, spells have a range on them, both are specifically stated, in the weapon profile, or in the spell description. GW doesn't have a specific definition for what is a ranged attack, but the english language should suffice for the source of said definition.
