A confession is in order and here it is: I'm a reformed Chaos player who has been touched by the power of the horned rat and who is seeking victory for the verminous horde! I haven't really played WHFB much for the last 10 years or so, and the last time I played I had just abandoned my all Khorne Chaos Knight army for the Skaven because I was taking the game too seriously (and losing a lot at the same time). I'm coming to grips with the 8th edition rules, which I like so far, and also with this new army which is very different from what I'm used to. My first attempts at Skaven army making were the typical SAD armies, but I feel like fielding 2 grey seers, 200 slaves and 50 Jezzails in a 2000 point army seems really un-fun for everyone involved. So it's down to this. I build a balanced army (couple of clanrat units, couple of slaves, some plague monks, some magic, a little shooting and maybe a doomwheel or something) and I line it up against people and I'm sitting there thinking, "how on earth can I beat THAT?" I guess I'm stuck in the old mentality from my chaos days where I look at my individual guys, and even individual units and think I can't possibly win combat. How do you guys get over that feeling? The balanced army seems to be the best mix of fun and winnability, is that really the case? I think showing up to a game with that SAD army I listed above would not get me many matches or friends but playing with something balanced would be, hopefully, both fun and competitive. |

You have gone from the best warriors on the planet to below average troops, you whole play style has to change. Its not about straight up fights it about bogging down his elites, shooting into combat with slaves to weaken them most of our spells can be cast into combat. As a warriors player you know how good Chosen are in combat dont fight fair. try lore of plague against him 3+ ward doesnt stop wither or dreaded 13th for example feed him slaves while withering his unit and hit him with some warplightning shots. get him down to 14 or less and dreaded 13th him when he finally breaks slaves. Gutter runners with slings and poison are golden and 2 units of 7 with that set up is only is dirt cheap roughly around 250 points. They allow you time to deal with problem units by allowing you to sit back, they target problem warmachines. This means you are not forced to close until you are ready and believe me if you are hitting him with 2 warplightning cannons you will be causing havoc and he will want to close with you. If you allow your opponent to march across the table and fight fair you are playing the wrong army. Shove some big blocks of slaves in his face and keep your clanrats and hitty units as a secondary battle line, once you have blunted his units effectiveness and weakened units pick your fights. even in combat with slaves he is not safe from your cannons and warpfire throwers. Have you seen how many models the tear shaped flame template can hit shot across a unit at the diagonal??? once you have done it once your opponent will move heaven and earth to kill it Units like abominations work great at clipping the corners of fights. i deploy narrow meaning my opponent often overlaps that way when the abom or doomwheel charges in he has limited attacks back as you clip his corner you have impact hits, charge bonus thunderstomp etc. There are loads of synergies with your spells slaves cost 2 points who cares if plague hits everything in combat if you have withered his elite unit to toughness 2, oh dear i have to take a toughness test for my abomination when I only fail on a 6 and can regen it |

That's basically one of my main strategies. Slaves are pure GOLD. Shoot and magic the enemy whilst they're in combat with our slaves. If they do survive, they'll have to deal with our second wave of rats! |

you would need to read the special rules for warlord queek - basically makes storm vermin better. i personally dont bother with clan rats - its slaves and storm vermin for me + abomb and plague claw catapult. units of 40+ slaves and units of 30+ storm vermin (with the bell) |

Daniel cannot possibly exist in a dimensional state. Recent studies show that people who have attempted to comprehend Daniel have either disappeared, died spontaneously, or driven themselves into a pertinent state of insanity and/or catatonia. <img src="http://www.heresy-online.net/daemons/adoptables/23041.gif" alt="Broken Adoptable Image" /><br><a href="http://www.heresy-online.net/daemons/levelup/23041-dark-whisper.htm" title="Level up this Daemon!">Level up Adoptable!</a> | |

We, the Skaven players, are not at all having a harder time than most. Though our armies have many facets and strategies that take time to master, even a youngblood such as yourself can one day become a full-fledged Deathrunner :ph43r: First off - Skaven has the single best choice for throwing literally hundreds of wounds onto the table: Skavenslaves. Nobody can match the weight of bodies we can throw out there. So use Skavenslaves. They are great for tying up those deadly Chaos Warriors or that Greater Demon. They make wonderful use of the new Steadfast rule. I'd suggest you try 2 x 40 slaves. I run mine only with a musician to keep them cheap, but opinions on this vary. Second - SAD is dead. In part because of the new rulebook, but more than anything else because of the new army book. So give it up - and I'd advise you to leave your jezzails at home entirely. They have become a relatively soft, inaccurate firebase that is easy to put down. I'd suggest 2 cannons, Lotsa slaves and warpfire throwers, a grey seer and some gutter runners. |

If you are mostly aquainted with WoC you should say goodbye to the tactic of simply rushing into the next CC. There are units you simply cannot beat in close combat. Chaos warriors will even give swordmasters a run for their money, but the common clanrat cannot hold a candle to most enemies.Stormvermin are another league, as they can reliably kill other units, but they are squishy and expensive. While skaven do not win many CCs, they still will not lose many. While we hit like girls, we can take more hits than anybody else. Even a bunch of khorne knights will need half a year to cut through a slaves unit of equal size. And while a chaos player will cry about every single foodman he loses to the 13th or a warpfirethrower, you simply doe not have to care about your lost slaves. As long as they are steadfast, they are doing their job. |
