Let us make a collection of all the tricks we can do with slaves in 8th. The slaves are the probably the most potent weapon in our arsenal, when used in combinations with other units. - The basic use is to keep an expensive killer unit occupied with a huge slave unit. It will lock down the enemy for several turns turns while chewing through the slaves. It's very cheap too. - Bring a huge unit of slaves, then charge the opponents monster and shoot WLC and cast Cracks Call at it. Alternative plan for driving a doomwheel into the monster. - Bring a huge unit of slaves to engage units too hard to handle for our melee units and thin out in their numbers with template/unit attacks such as Scorch, Plague, PWM and WFT. - Warpfire throwers are hard to bring on target with their short range and more or fire rule, but pin the target down with slaves and move the WFT into position and from the next turn and onwards cover the target in fire. - The Slave Bomb: Have a deep unit of slaves you consider lost, but want to take a few (a lot!) of enemies with you. Move the general and BSB more than 12" away form the slaves and watch them explode from Cornered Rats with their next break test. Works even better if you can have the bomb hits several enemy units. Can be useful for wiping out depleted units and gain VP from them. - Use Cornered Rats to park an enemy in position to have something nasty charge it on your next turn. Such when as slaves being in the way of a HPA, doomwheel or RO charge. The enemy will get a free reform, so it's unlikely to grant a flank charge. |

Well, im not sure if this counts but, if you have 15 spare points in your Hero points then you can upgrade your slaves to LD 5 and Depending because of SiN they become LD 8, if you dont have enough ranks for that then the slaves are boned either way. Also a very basic one, Give them a musician, Swift-Reform is awesome, especially to maximise attacks based on the size of the enemy unit charging you. Also if you happen to draw combat then you dont want to lose and maybe run becuase you didnt spend the extra 2 points. Waagh stole most of the good tips

Yep. 15 point warlock and a musician allow slaves to work at least a little better outside the general's zone. Even if they panic they rally on a somewhat respectable (for skaven) 6. |

Most of this can be summarized by "pin the enemy down and shoot/charge him" Where are the days one would redirect the enemy unit with slaves, charge it in the flank and break it with CR? *sigh* A "minor" tricks you could perhaps get off with slaves: You can use them as a speed buffer for your units that want to flee from an enemy charge. Let your unit flee through a horde of 50 slaves and it will be secure, while the wothless vermin takes the beating of that chaos knights regiment that would otherwise have eaten your 200 points shooters. This of course has only limited use, but perhaps for poison wind mortars or poison globadiers it could sometimes come in quite handy, as they can fire into the slaves combat on their next turn. |

A few other small tips would be to stick them in front of our warmachines. anyone trying to shoot out WLC or catapults with BS weapons will suffer -2 from cover given by the slaves while the cannon takes no penalty since its not BS based. Another smaller tip would be to use them as a 2nd charging unit with a hammer unit. ie 6 ROs declare a charge on a small unit of spearmen. spears flee, THEN declare a charge with the slaves. You now have 2 chances of catching the fleeing unit to wipe them out rather than one and you have one of the ROs flanks protected by slaves who will also be out of battle line formation. |
