Starter Force

I am totally new to Skaven. Will the force included in the Island of Blood set be a good starting place? This army will split my attention and time with my Beastmen, so it will probably grow slowly. I will add scratchbuilt warmachines and use some Ungor Beastmen as slaves. I know that it doesn't include Stormvermin, Gutter Runners, or many of the other popular units. It seems like a pretty good core force to my newbie eyes, otherwise.

Thanks!

The Island of Blood starter is looking like a great place to start a Skaven army. If you divide the contents with an Elf player, or just do a contents swap, you essentially get a battalion with a warpfire thrower, mortar, warlock, and warlord minus twenty plague monks, two packmasters and six giant rats. And all for like $60 USD cheaper.

Also, you can NEVER have enough clanrats or skavenslaves. Ever. You always need more clanrats and skavenslaves.
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage...

THIRTEENTH SPELL CASTS: 13 KILLS: 72 Empire Swordsmen, 12 Greatswords, 1 Warrior Priest, 2 Captains of the Empire, 1 Whatever the Empire's lord-level mage is called, 36 Dwarf Hammerers, 2 Thanes, 1 Dwarf Lord on Shieldbearers, 1 Dwarf Lord, 19 Saurus Temple Guard, 14 Chaos Chosen, 12 Glade Guard

Fellblade Kills: 3 Dwarven war machines, 1 Dwarf Runelord, 1 Dark Elf Hyrdra, 1 High Elf Sun Dragon, 1 High Elf Dragon Mage

The IoB is an awesome way to start. I just picked up my models (been playing proxy skaven for about a year now) and that box was a must have. And as to not having enough Clan Rats or Slaves, I know this oh, so well. In adition to the IoB I bought 2 Battalion box sets and will just barely have enough of both to effectively field 'em, and not how I want to. I even had to convert my old Clan Rats into slaves, along with 18 monks to have enough. And I'm thinking about converting the elf infantry in to slaves as well. So, it is true, you never have enough Clan Rats or Slaves.
TRADE
I'm looking for Dark Eldar to convert into DE. Also looking for bretonnia lances and halberds. If anyone has any they would be interested in trading PM me and we can work something out.

"And, most vivid of all, there was the dramatic epic of the rats––the scampering army of obscene vermin which had burst forth from the castle three months after the tragedy that doomed it to desertion––the lean, filthy, ravenous army which had swept all before it and devoured fowl, cats, dogs, hogs, sheep and even two hapless human beings before its fury was spent. Around that unforgettable rodent army a whole separate cycle of myths revolves, for it scattered among the village homes and brought curses and horrors in its train."

IOB in combination with the battalion looks like a great way to start. 2 IOB and 1 battalion should give you 1600ish points without magic items, if you run a third of the clanrats as slaves. Looks like it could be a very effective army as well, and not just "oh, at least it's cheap". Much better than the high elf half of the set.

Might be a bit much to buy it all at the same time, though, lots of unpainted plastic staring at you. :) I'd probably try to paint one box before buying another.

I don't know about the High Elf half not being as good as the Scaven half. Have you read the newest White Dwarf? The High Elf player had a very solid list, and it was made from the contents of two IoBs and a High Elf Batalion Box. The highlights where a block of 32!!! Spearmen (8 by 4) and 18 Sword Masters of Hoeth (9 by 2).

The High Elf half may have less models, and multiples of the box may add up to a less viable force (nobody wants 2 Griffons, and few will ever need 20 Swordmasters) but as a one time purchase the High Elves get a LOT more points in their half than us Skaven do in ours.

I recently did an article actually on bringing the IoB starter up to a commendable size.
