Hi everyone, The wife and I are starting a joint Skaven army once the Isle of Blood box set comes out (we'd already decided to after the Skaven book came out and I collect High Elves anyway so it was like GW was reading my mind when they decided on the box contents), so though I'd better come across here. Anyway, first few questions (which probably cover a few of the different sub-forums on here, so apologies for that). 1) I'm intending to magnetise our Skaven as I have done with my High Elves. As I've found it somewhat annoying with metal models that I need to get the magnets flush with the bottom of the base to ensure they don't fly off once the movement tray is tilted a certain distance, I'm planning to try and only buy plastics for our Skaven army as far as possible. Is there a good up-to-date list for which models are available in plastic knocking about somewhere on the forum? 2) Can anyone point me to some exceptionally good painting guides for Skaven (either on here or elsewhere)? I'm particularly interested in more alternative schemes rather than doing something similar to what you usually see in White Dwarf or the Sakven army book. 3) I've not read much from the Black Library (in fact just one of the Horus Heresey books) so I'm not familiar with the WFB ones. Are there any good ones involving Skaven the wife and I can read to get into a more ratty frame of mind? 4) er... Sure there was something else I was meaning to ask but can't remember now. cheers |

Welcome to the UnderEmpire Since you're new here I'll work out a good price for the information 1) Off the top of my head: Grey seer (on bell), Warlord/Chieftain, Plague priest (on furnace), Warlock Engineer, Clanrats/Slaves, Stormvermin, Giant rats, Rat ogres, Plague monks, warpfire thrower, poisoned wind mortar, night runners (old sculpts), Doomwheel are all the plastic models GW produces at the moment, including what's in IOB (I may have missed something but I can't think what). If you fancy something that isn't listed there are loads of threads in the painting/modelling section that give ideas on how to convert them from other kits. 2) Again, check the painting/modelling section, there are lots of excellent painters here. 3) The novel 'Grey Seer' is a good read, and a sequel to it 'Temple of the Serpent' is out soon. 4) The answer's 42. See you round the tunnels

Gortek and Felix "Skaven Slayer" is also pretty good (you just need to read quickly through those pesky segments about gortek and felix ) and a few of the books in the series imediately after skaven slayer has them in it as well.

Hi everyone. Thanks for you response. Re the painting articles - I know there's a lot there, was just wondering if anyone could point me to one that's a definite "must see" before I move on to others. cheers |

If you want some alternative colour schemes, check through the Army Diary forum. I immediately think of Scruitiss (very "shades-of-brown" on stellar bases) and Demagorgon (one of the finest examples of a dark, grey skinned army ever). Should be easy enough to find, though I'll take a look around if I have time. Also, here are a few of the links I keep handy in my personal notepad (on the UE.net under My Controls): Nagash's Gallery: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v695/vilebroth/? Scriv's Priest: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=15925 Scriv's Warlord: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=14401 Bass's RO's: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=14890 Warwolt's RO's: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=14140 Scriv's Monks: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=12257 Unwanted's Grey Skin: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=28705&st=15 Squiggoth's Tutorial: http://underempire.net/index.php?showtopic=34916 (look kind of like GW's, but darker) Hmmmm... there seem to be few missing, but it should get you started. |

The more unique styles that I can recall off the top of my head are: Scruitiss (a stark, brown heavy style; Demagorgon (greyish tone, skin is dark and blends into the fur) Fantasyfreak (similar to GW's but more subtle, almost soft) Slah (cold, almost undead, look, with lots of gore) And just to throw in my two pennies worth, I shy away from the GW style of painting the "bald" areas as skin, which makes the model look too hairless IMO, so I paint the "bald" parts as fur as well. Here's an example: ![]() Have a look around our painting section, there are heaps of good tips there. At the moment, I got to say that the number 1 tip is: Devlan Mud!
