Rat Swarms and buildings

I found a use for rat swarms. They can assault buildings. 10 rat swarms would give out 50 attacks. Death Frenzy rat swarms would cough out 70 attacks when assaulting a building.

Admittedly it is only Str 2.

I might be missing something though.

Aren't you limited to 3 bases of swarms in a building assault?

No, it's only mostrous infantry/beasts/cavalry and normal monsters that are limited. I suggested swarms for occupying watchtowers in one of the other threads but I didn't think about using them to attack as well. Give them poison from that plague spell whose name eludes me and it should be interesting. :D

Your still talking a lot of points [250] frankly the best skaven way to assault a tower would be to blow it up.

Or blow up the contents...which ever happens first.

Very true, although to guarantee crack's call requires three lvl2 engineers or you could try for a screaming bell, and these aren't exactly cheap investments (although given the choice I'd run the warlocks over the swarms any day). This is just something else to consider, might be viable if you want to make a list specifically for the 'capture the tower' mission.

they really aren't as affective as they sound. yes you have the potential to do a lot of damage if you get really lucky on the rolls. but on average you're hitting on 4s vs nearly everything so only 25 hit average. then vs t3 you're wounding on 5s so only 8-9 wounds, and against anything t4+ your wounding on 6s so only 3-4 wounds from those 50 attacks...and they'll still get full armor saves. and then they are attacking you back and hitting you on 4s or better, and very easily wounding your t2, most building assaulters are likely to be s4+ so wounding back on 2+. They might work against goblins or equivalent in a tower, but anything beyond that should be able to whether the attacks and put equal or more hurt into the swarms. Unless of course you are blessed by the dice gods, but the average performance doesn't look too good.

Rat Ogres, or Censer Bearers are our best bets for attacking buildings, not counting just bringing the building down. Censer bearers in particular are looking like my favored unit for tower assault/defense this edition. For less points then the rat swarms you can get each of the 10 defenders taking a toughness test, then you hit them with 30 hatred attacks usually on 4+ so you'll get 23-24 through which is nearly the same as the swarms, but these are at s5 since flail isn't a charge bonus. against t3-5 you should be doing 8-15 wounds, after the toughness tests have also taken a toll.

Now rat swarm tower defense could work at least for a little bit. 10 swarms in a tower is 50 wounds the attacks have to get through, and they can only attack on their turn so you should easily be able to weather 2-3 turns if not the whole game. You'll probably be losing 10-20 wounds a turn with unstable and combat losses. but they are unbreakable so won't leave the tower.

They'd be lucky to hold against a frenzied unit 30 attacks if witch elfs they would kill about 3 bases in the first round maybe 4 and then the crumble rule comes in and kills another couple they wont last for more than 2 rounds of combat.

Honestly I can't see fielding 10 swarms just in case I roll the tower mission. Seems an incredible waste of points.
