Portable watchtower

Are there situations where this magic item can be put to good use (beside a gunline formation)?

some ideas:
-place it at the center of the table, put as many jezzails as possible into the tower. May be useful if the tower is put on the table with charakter models, since this can totally waste the enemies deployment.

-move a unit of slaves with as many ranks as possible in front of the tower. Anything that approaches gets attacked by the slaves and now you start shooting into combat with a bonus range of xy inches (slaves with 10 ranks have a lengh of around 8 inches I guess). ratling guns with 18+8 range could get nasty, I think.

But that just slipped my mind without knowing the exact rules for towers...

It makes a nice sneaky difference sometimes. I recently went up against empire and put 5 jezzails in the portable tower, they terrorized his knights and cannons all game.

You can't shoot your own slaves - you can shoot units engaged with them.

It has to be put in your deployment zone so no go on the putting it in the middle of the table idea.

the only real use of the tower would be to hide your grey seer in it. and hope you get the spells with long range. It's not really that great except for gunline armies.

You can also garrison a WLC in it for a bit of extra protection from shooting and greater line of sight.

Since I am at work , I don't have my book with me.

Is there any limitations on what you can put in this and any size restrictions?

For example my friend has a Tzeentch Chaos Warrior Army with no fliers or shooty stuff and therefore would it make a BSB shelter and perhaps loads of Jezzails around the perimiter picking off his warriors.

Has anyone actually used one?

The watchtower allows "1 unit". That unit could be 400 Clan Rats if you want. :)

Realistically, Jezzails with their 36" range are probably the best use for the tower. 400 Clan Rats would be impossible to root out though.

As an addition to above, I'm pretty sure that 'unit' includes attached characters so as long as your BSB is with your jezzails you should be able to hide them all away in the tower.

10 models get to fight and whoever kills the most wins
If I killed one more than you did, you get pushed out of the tower

Drew is right statistically speaking because it is a kill to win basic clanrats rate fairly poorly.

The New Lunar Republic!
Try 3 Rat Ogres boosted by Skweel Gnawtooth, have them fight, and have Throt the Unclean fight as well. I'd like to see someone root this unit out :P

they still get a steadfast breaktest, and possibly reroll if the banner is near/in the tower.

Swordmasters do very well in these watchtower fights. Granted a special character lord would maybe beat them, but what if they have a special character of their own?

some comparisons.

swordmaster: They are going to be pretty tough for anyone to dislodge i think. point for point i think they are some of the better tower defenders.
162pts gets you 9+champ
21 asf, ws6 s5 attacks

Rat Ogres
163 pts gets you: 2 regular, master bred, packmaster
6-ws3 s5
4-ws4 s5
2-ws3 s3

i'm thinking censer bearers for tower attack/defense. tower combats are never prolonged so it'll always be first round of combat (flail and hatred). flail is not a charge bonus so it's not negated by the tower, i needa double check this but i believe i'm correct. For base 2 base you pick an enemy model for each of your models which means no self tests. 2 attacks...3 if you still have your frenzy. just keep the bsb nearby so you can reroll those berserker rage tests :/

censer bearers
160 pts gets you
10 toughness tests
20(30 if still frenzied) ws3 s5 hatred attacks

A blood curling cough a day, keeps the assassins away

You do need to test for your own censers, every model wielding a censer or in base contact with a wielder needs to take a T-test.

Skaven for defending the tower, let's face it it's not our strongest point. I found storm vermin effective for this using your hand weapon instead of your halberd. 3+ AS and a 6+WS helps you to minimize the kill so you can pass your steadfast test and push the attacker out. Just keep on doing so untill backup shows up and you flank charge as the assaulting unit needs to be pushed away from the building id the defender passes it's steadfast test.

any one ever had to push out chosen warriors of tzeenth with a 3+ ward save? lost effort really, no matter what you throw at them they save and you die. our template attacks are also minimized to only d6 hits and so on...worst experience ever
