I'm slowly massing my verminous horde (and discovering that yes, you can paint too much detail on skaven slaves) and I've been wondering on how to rank up my main battle rats. I'm sorta down to two choices:

42 clanrats in a group, arranged six wide and seven ranks deep. Benefits are a wider attack base (twelve attacks instead of ten) and a more blocky unit.

40 clanrats arranged five wide and eight ranks deep. Benefits are a TON of ranks for leadership and steadfast, but it makes a rather...long and unwieldy unit.

Which do you guys think would be more effective? And/or how do you run your rats? Is it worthwhile to even do the "horde" maneuver, and sacrifice extra ranks for attacks? I would like all the info I can get to decide, as I have to make up a bunch of movement trays and want the best possible positions BEFORE I start painting and assembling the trays. :P

Thanks all for the help...uhh...errr....I mean.....*cough* Give-give Warlord Strike-Strike battle tactics or face the wrath of my rat ogres! :3
"Yes-yes Oh esteemed one...my rat ogre DID eat four of yer Stormvermin...but it's a special rat ogre, it only eats traitors!" "They were plotting against you!" "Save-save yer life I did!" "Reward?"

Seven wide will maximize your frontage on most units. Most people go five wide to get ranks and most use the old default five wide movement tray.

Then again these are clanrats, maximizing your frontage will probably hurt more than help. Not very many things in the warhammer world lose combat to clanrats.

While this is true you could argue that the big base units are bigger so you would need 8 wide. Personally I would go for 5 wide or 10.

As saurus warriors tend to be 6 wide rather than 5 and you can get 9 wide to attack them.

It really depends on playing style.
