I am a newbie for Skaven also!

I will buy two set of the starter too, and I already have 2 battalion and other war machines & lord heros.

I will like to have a unit of monks pushing Plague Furnace! this unit can be your die hard forward, last time I use Lizardmen to fight them, they are quiet tough to beat, but if you wish to use them, 20 monks are not really enough, and this is why I buy two battalion.

Also I want to ask...... What's the different between slaves and clan rat in figures? becuz the body are just the same......

Well if your kit bashing save the ones with metal and use the leather/cloth ones for slaves as well as cut off spears to make club handweapons and avoid giving them any metal. And then most rats paint their slaves with a lighter fur tone.

If you're interested I will post up my list for you to inspect.

Yes do it. I want to know what a good 8th list looks like (IIRC you have had success, so i presumme your list doesn't fail).

Also, icecoolio: basically, the only difference between slaves and Clanrats is the bodies without metal armour are slaves.... (or that's how i use it.) I find it hard to tell the difference betwee some of them though.... O_o

I don't mind when I accidentally kill my own.  They were probably asking for it anyway.

The UK baggage handlers hate your luggage, and can sense delicate expensive stuff.

Thank you s'nkeep and SkitterPaw!

I find out most of the skaven clan in battalion has metal armour.....

Well, I will try to do something about this, thank you so much about the tips.

Oh! And also are clan good at using spear or hand weapons? I just know that slave just keep it cheap.

Thanks

The thing is, I want some variety in my army as well. I don't want every third clanrat to look the same, so I'm going to get the battalion for the options of spears and handweapons, etc. Having 60 Clanrats multipart and in different arm poses will help bring life to the regiments. I don't want 200 odd Clanrats that have EXACTLY the same pose, over and over again.

Thanks for the opinions, though :)

I've done plenty of reading, thanks. This was more of a plan of what I'm getting and what I'm going to build. This is what my 2500 list looks like:

2500 Pts - Skaven Roster

Chieftan (1#, 124 pts)
. . 1[(#]Chieftain (Battle Standard Bearer) @ 124 pts (Hand Weapon; Halberd; Heavy Armour; Shield; Battle Standard Bearer)
. . . . 1 Storm Banner

. . 1 Warlock Engineer @ 100 pts (Level 2 Wizard; Hand Weapon)

Warlock Engineer (1#, 45 pts)
. . 1 Warlock Engineer @ 45 pts (Hand Weapon)
. . . . 1 Doomrocket

Warlock Engineer (1#, 65 pts)
. . 1 Warlock Engineer @ 65 pts (Hand Weapon)
. . . . 1 Skavenbrew

Clanrats (42#, 250 pts)
. . 39 Clanrats @ 250 pts (Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Hand Weapon; Light Armour)
. . . . 1 Clawleader (Hand Weapon; Light Armour)
. . . . 2 Warpfire Thrower Weapon Team (Warpfire Thrower; Hand Weapon; Heavy Armour)

. . 29 Clanrats @ 205 pts (Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Hand Weapon; Light Armour)
. . . . 1 Clawleader (Hand Weapon; Light Armour)
. . . . 2 Poisoned Wind Mortar Weapon Team (Poisoned Wind Mortar; Hand Weapon; Heavy Armour)

Clanrat Slaves (30#, 62 pts)
. . 30 Skavenslaves @ 62 pts (Musician Mus; Hand Weapon)

Clanrat Slaves (30#, 62 pts)
. . 30 Skavenslaves @ 62 pts (Musician Mus; Hand Weapon)

Clanrat Slaves (30#, 62 pts)

Warp-Lightning Cannon (1#, 90 pts)
. . 1 Warp-Lightning Cannon @ 90 pts
. . . . 1 Engineer & Crew

Giant Rats (29#, 97 pts)

. . . . 1 Plague Banner

Total Roster Cost: 2500

Unfortunately there's no 8th edition update for Army Builder as of yet...

What does everyone think?

the problem with buying a battalion and saying i dont want ever third rat to look exactly the same, is that in the battalion, they kinda do already. the island of blood are set up in the same way as the rats in a battalion, just missing an arm. if youre looking to save money, you can buy 20 random skaven weapons on ebay for 1 dollar, then use those for the island of blood guys (that is of course, if theres no crazy arm variants in the starter set).

also, im not 100% sure that the island of blood has the shields already equipped, but there isnt a whole ton you can really do with shield placement on clanrats without making it look odd even if they are. all in all, you are on the path to a great start no matter what you decide. really no wrong answers. the plague monks are a little low, but time and time again they always let me down. i dunno. they drop quickly with no little defense. the only thing that saves them is my opponent knowing that he can kill them quickly if he needs to, and focusing on something else and forgetting. so perhaps im just a little jaded at them right now.

the worst part, of course, will be painting 200-300 models, when your friends paint 40.

I've seen the Isle of Blood figures up close, they do in fact all have the shields pre-molded on to their bodies and the only free piece is the arm with either a spear choice or hand weapon choice (so they do have hand weapons in the starter set). Frankly after looking at the Isle of Blood pieces I passed on trying to turn them into a slave unit, none of them have the cool chain pieces on them that the current clanrat boz carries, and they all have a certain similar look to one another in terms of pose that just doesn't fit with my idea of an unruly slave mob.

thats the same problem I had when I started my skaven army. I went all out balls to the wall, now I have 450 clanrats and 450 slaves to paint. The best piece of advice I can give is to get some cheap brown primer, 1 can did about 120 rats for me. I also find a small unit of gutter runner invaluable now, I used to be able to get away with not taking any, but war machines are so deadly on my big horde units I have to spring for at least one unit to take care of the crew.
