Hi all,

8th edition is finally getting me into WHFB, and I have to go with the best army in the lot. Doesn't hurt that I've played skaven in both Mordheim and Bloodbowl years ago, so I have a few rats already primed and painted.

I've picked up the Battalion box, two boxes of Clanrats, and have enough Mordheim figures I can put to work as Nightrunners or Gutter Runners.

I'm still wrapping my head around the rules, so any pointers for a relative Noob? I'm definately picking up the Island of Blood box set when it comes out, so rogres, weapon teams and solos are covered....but are there any other must-have units I should look at? Or builds for the units I do have? (aside from many many spears)

Before I go crazy and start converting the hell out of things, that is. ;)

Aside from a battalion, more clanrats and things in the Island of Blood set, I can't think of any real essentials beyond a few extra characters. A Chieftain to carry your Army Battle Standard is a very good option. A Plague Priest can add some punch to a unit and fling some spells around pretty effectively. And if you favor magic, a Grey Seer is a no-brainer inclusion for the list.

hi.
i'm assuming you have a 8th ed rule book. if not, it's essential. i played a 1000 point tourny, two of the generals did not have the book. <_<
not essential, but useful, globadiers and rat ogres. i know globadiers are expensive due to only metal models, but the expression on your opponents face is worth the price when you say "4's to wound" vs anything :D . 6 rat ogres and 4 pack masters are just about as good as we can get in our army in combat.

i am a noob as well, so my opinion may need to be backed up by some other, more experienced players, but i have fell in love with my doomwheel. It is great for knockin out monstrous creatures/cavalry/anything with a high toughness or low save. And it is kinda wanky fun, rollin around the board and doin its thing. And i dont think they are over $40, so it won't break the bank

Thanks for the feedback folks. It's definately got the <doom>wheels turning. :D

Yes, ratboy, I've got my rulebook and armybook, as well as dice, templates, etc. I wanted to make sure I had it done right. I've already got 2 rogres and packmasters, but had held off on the globadiers, because of the price. With so many cheaper plastic options, it's hard to pick the metal figures.

Same reason I've held off on plague censers. Plus, I don't want to get too carried away...not yet.

I'm definately light in the character department...and the new Doomwheel is cool, even if tactically a bit questionable. :D

Are our named characters worth the points, or am I better off sticking with generic characters for the time being?

And any suggestions for weapon team attachments for the clanrats? Are warpfire throwers better than ratling guns?

warpfire throwers IMHO are much better (and higher points) than rattling guns. if you feel like creating some pieces the doom flayer and the mortar teams are pretty good. you may want to stay away from PCB's. they are awefully fragile in the 8th ed. the 2 special characters i like (and use) squeal gnawtooth and queek.

If you want cheap(er) PWGs try and get your hands on some ork (thats space ork) burna backpacks and mount them with the tube sticking up in the air, and give the rat a mask. Then sculpt a hand around an orb and put it on an arm.

Thanks for the suggestion, Skreetz...I've got some old GorkaMorka I'll have to go digging through.

I was looking at Skweel and Tretch as possible characters this afternoon. And a Screaming Bell and a Doomwheel in the not too distant future. :)

I would recommend building a screaming bell out of popsicle sticks. I did this firstly because I'm cheap, and also because the new bell looks silly to me. :P

Anyway just find a christmas decoration bell and chuck it on there.

If you're good at converting you should be able to make a lot of stuff from scratch, which is actually nice because then it will be unique. :P

The Screaming Bell is the next big addition to my army...but putting it off for a month or so. I've spent the last month collecting, and now have a pile of unassembled, unpainted figures staring at me every time I walk into the room. lol

Though, looking at my Plague Rats, I'm stuck deciding if maybe a Plague Furnace wouldn't do me better first.

Do people recommended one over the other? Screaming Bell or Plague Furnace?

On the converting side, I really want to try building up a Doom-Flayer.

If you're interested in both, I'd recommend the furnace first. It can be used in smaller games, and it packs a big punch. For larger games, the Bell is great. A lot better in this edition giving your Grey Seer a 4+ ward, 2+ vs spells, 18" leadership, combined stats for the nasty stat test or dead spells, and the Bell chart got better (imo). I have both and love using both together in large (2500-3000) point games.
