Hey guys, I'm new here and I'm feeling right at home with the rat pack! So, my bday just passed and I have come into some disposable cash (gf won't let me spend any of my "paycheck" money on an army).... yeah.... anyway, I haven't played Skaven since 1994 or 1995 and gave away my entire army when I quit playing. So, I picked up the 8th Ed BRB and I'm loving the way the game sounds now. I desperately want my Skaven army back but since I have no models at all I gotta start from scratch. Interestingly enough my main opponents will be Skaven and High Elves, which means Isle of Blood will be a great investment, however it's not out yet and I don't want to wait a damn month before I can watch the fur fly! Are Slaves a must? I understand their point values and the new Horde rules but honestly I'd really rather not field them. Anyway, I have $200 to burn and no idea what to get. I'll be playing at 1500 pts to start, and I'm pretty sure I want a Grey Seer. After that I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance! |

The thing about slaves is, anything can be a skaven slave. So if you have access to any other minature, even on loan, you can put them out as slaves. Goblin spearmen are probably one of the more abundant troops out there and make great slaves. Battle for Skull pass box set came with about 50 of the buggers. Plus 20 or 30 dwarves, also decent slaves, and a bunch of useless spider riders which you can trade or sell. As far as stuff to buy, the doomwheel is fairly cheap and a pretty decent rare unit, especially for its point cost. Plastic clan rats are a must, you can never have too many. Monks and Stormvermin aren't essential units, but are fun to use as they provide some real punch that clanrats just don't have. Rat ogres are pretty expensive and the set is kinda lame. Packmasters are easily converted from plastic priests or night runners. I'd wait on the rogers and get some cheap off ebay once people start parting away their box sets. Ebay is pretty awesome. Remember the GW employees get a big discount so I think a lot of them are making some extra cash by selling stuff on ebay. I think the employees get 50 percent off, so you can get stuff on ebay 25-30 percent off all the time. New unopened boxes straight from GW. Conversion stuff is pretty abundant too, there are a lot of "bitz" sellers. The aforementioned packmasters are easy to put together. Like I said, night runners or monks, and then just buy a couple "bitz" packs of packmaster weapons (whips and mancatchers). |

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php and ebay are your friend. The best place to start with atm is getting the battalion box. |

Omens and Kevlar both gave some great advice. A Battalion box, maybe an extra box of Clanrats, a Doomwheel or Warp lightning cannon and a couple of characters for a Grey Seer, Warlord and a Chieftain or two. Weapon teams will be good if you have the money for those too. I'm not exactly fond of the slaves either, though they are excellent value for their points. Probably something about that WS2 though it doesn't even matter that much. And sorry for intruding a bit on your private life but why aren't you allowed to spend your own money on a hobby? I can understand if you're a bit low on money, have mortgage to pay or kids to feed (or if you have thousands of unpainted minis in the closet already ). If it's just "real men don't play with dolls" or a reason like that... sigh... Would she be happy if you spent it on booze, designer high-heeled shoes or hockey pucks?Another good place to buy minis from is Wayland Games. The prices are similar, sometimes more expensive, sometimes cheaper that Maelstrom. They just seem to have more Warhammer stuff in stock than Maelstrom. |

Maelstorm will be low on stock atm due to them having a sale on till the 1st ![]() If you not going to buy on ebay, get things from maelstorm or wayland, they are by far cheaper than buying it locally no matter where you live. I would take a serious look at some of the bitz sellers on ebay, you can pick up all the bits to make full units for often less than you could buy the full sprues for (eg I managed to pick up enough bits to make 20 plague monks for about $10us) |

Since you're going to start from scratch you will absolutely NEED clanrats. buy a box or two of those and unless you enjoy painting clanrat after clanrat i'd buy some other single models as well on which your painting skills can feast. Such as a Grey seer or a weapon team for your clanrats. Or you could buy a battalion box: great way to start out. As previously stated Ebay is your friend when it comes to finding some cheap deals. If you still don't know what to do with your money I'd be happy to give you my PayPal account where you can leave that hefty burden of yours :ph43r: |
