It will be a pricey horde, but I fully intend to field a QueekStar of 50 Juiced Stormvermin, carrying either the Wailing Banner (For those weaker-willed armies,) or the Razor Standard for Dwarf eating. (3 ranks of WS5, S5, I5 walking into a gaggle of dwarfs, Hitting on 3s, Wounding on 3s and reducing Dwarf save by -3... Yes-yes, Queek will be pleased.)

Expensive as all hell, but I'm building a Clan Mors theme army; I don't care!

In another thread I have presented my vision of the 2500 skaven army. Now I would like to ask you all fellow warlords how to deal with enemy deathstar units. Let mi give an exmaple or two of them:

40 white lions FCG with the ITP banner, housing a bsb with the immune to ALL magic banner, ethereal lord mage that nullifies all magic weapons in btb, -1 to hit from shooting and 6+ ward save against war machines. It is stubborn on the general's 9 with reroll, it can move through forests unmolested, and it can rapidly change formation to face any enemy: horde when fighting anything wide enough, a line when faced with enemy artillery, a brick when (if at all?) anything threatens to destroy it in combat to minimise looses. In combat, it dishes out as a horde 31 S6 attacks with rerolls to hit every CC phase.

Another example:

33 Grave Guard / GW / FCG/ Barrows. Supported by three necromancers with vanhal spells and a vampire lord with the helm, it will hit all but enemy powerfull lords on 2+ with magical S6 KB attacks, possible ASF from spells, of course standing in the horde formation, thus striking at least 31 attacks per phase.

Any thoughts are welcome here :-)

Charge the flank, don't even need to hit the front, and those supporting attacks are gone, those ranks are gone, you have a bonus to combat, and we've got cheap enough troops to throw at the enemy unit until we can get this situation.

I don't expect VC to be as scary, perhaps. Limited, and random, power dice and some truly wicked scrolls that almost any army can take and destroy wizards with... magic has an answer to it's own problem.

All right, I hit the flank and for one round of combat it's not that scary, but they hold (stubborn white lions on LD 9 from the archmage and unbreakable grave guards) and later they do the "reform amid defeat" trick and the butchery commences. I could try the scroll that deals damage to the caster against the above-mentioned archmage though.

The problem is that even when I get rid of the mages, the unit is still perfectly capable of anihilating any of our units in a round or two without taking much damage in return.
Doom, doom, all is doom, all is ruinous.

How big was your unit? Sounds to me like you need to up the numbers and use horde formation.

After playing against Lizardmen wielding Life last night, I'm thinking a Grey Seer + Power Scroll to force through a 13th Spell on the most dangerous unit. I don't like Grey Seers much though as I feel they are overcosted at 240 points since they have no option to learn all spells from a lore (a la Forbidden Lore from VC).

meh i feel they are cheap, 240 points naked with d3 warpstone....
Assassin kill toll: 1 oldblood, 1 vampire lord, 2 chaos lords, Bretonnian lord, 3 Minotaurs and numerous champions with overkill. An ever growing list!

Teclis (who can one shot kill aboms with irresistably casting the top level fireball on a double 1!)

IIRC you have to not only roll doubles but also beat the casting value of the spell for IF. I cant remember where I heard that or if it applies to him but perhapse someone else knows.

It's in his rules.

As a matter of fact, the paragraph that explains that part is in the 1.1 version of the High Elf errata.

"In addition, any spell cast by Teclis will be cast with irresistible force on any successful casting roll that is a double, however it will only be considered
a miscast if the roll includes a double 6.”

Any single one of our units, but that's true of just about any unit in fantasy. We're skaven, we're the under dogs. No one should be able to reach our lines unscathed, and having someone chew into our ranks is nothing new, or big. If they sunk large amounts of points into a single unit, fine, that makes it easier to swarm it!

Everyone takes damage in return now. Unless your dice hate you, you can hit anything and wound anything in this edition.

This is correct, you must beet the casting value of the spell in order for teclis to have the spell go off.

It really needs to be re-written for 8th...

If when casting the spell, if he rolls any double (apart from double 6's) the spell cannot be dispelled. If he rolls double 6's treat it as a irresistible force.

Yay for being right. Successful roll means that he has to roll above the value first ^Warpfire^

I don't think Rat Swarms are totally useless. Putting 3-4 in front of your cannon might make it harder for fast cav or scouts to charge wildly in. Plus even 4 swarms is nothing for, say, Dark Riders to dismiss blindly.
Twisted, evil, treacherous, and diabolical rats wielding arcane technologies that are dangerous to foe and friend, that care not for their kin and are constantly plotting against each other. What more need I say about what makes Skaven cool?

My Skaven Blog Updated November 29, 2009. 7:57 PM (-6 GMT)

Have spare little rats from the old clanrats, current plague monks, corpse cart, or individual rats from the doom wheel? PM me. I want them. 30 more needed.

That's what I was thinking. Back in 4th edition I thought nothing of spending 100 points on two swarms. Today for that I can get 4. I know they crumble, but against the right units they don't do all that badly and can hold for a turn or two and take up a lot less room than 50 slaves. Great for drawing out fanatics too :)

Plus they can actually wound T6+ stuff now which counterbalances them losing Poison Attacks in the last army book.

After reading this, I went to check up on almost all other level 4 wizards and you're are right. Other than Empire and Bretonnia, Grey Seer is cheaper than all the other armies I looked at.

So I take it back, he isn't overcosted. :)
