Throt-based army; How would you do it?

Is there any merit to building an army based around Rat Ogres as your core? Expensive, yes, but lets assume you have access to about 18 Rat Ogres that you were going to split into 3 units of 6 as your army core.

From a rules perspective you would not need Throt to cover these units based on percentages, because they would be less than 50% of your army in a 2000 point list. You would however need Throt if you didn't want the RO's to take up nearly all of your Special points. Moving them to a Core selection would mean you could still take a healthy chunk of Special's.

What I'm wondering is what units would compliment an army like this. I could still see a couple units of slaves and Giant Rats being usefull and fitting within a Moulder theme.

But beyond those what would fit and balance out the list? PWG's, maybe a unit of Stormvermin, and even a Doomwheel converted to be pushed by a Rat Ogre.

Anyone else see some options here? Or am I grasping at straws?

i think a rat ogre army sounds great! for a while now i have been preaching the benefits of a paradigm shift to members (on several different threads) of the UE. one of the things i mentioned a lot was the use of ROs and i think it's great that finally decided to try it (even if not as a result of my posts) i love the idea of the rat ogres pushing the doomwheel, possibly there are other ways of mouldering stuff, for example one of those mortar things could be a rat ogre throwing large lumps of warpstone at people

Certain among you have taken it upon yourselves to spill all our information from the previous turn.

Rat Ogres have always been solid choices, it just depends on what use you are talking about. I had no problem with them in 6th edition as flanking/light cav/skirmisher duty. Going back to a classic checkerboard deployment with these units staggered towards the back gave you a nice screen for them, or placed on the flank and out of LOS kept them from getting shot up too badly.

I'm not fully up to speed on the new 8th edition rules or even the new skaven book, but some of these things will never change. Biggest change is their ability (supposedly) as a front-line unit in a 2x3 formation. Obviously they'll still need some screening as they will be more tempting than ever, but I think a bigger question is whether or not they will be able to lose combat and hold long enough for support to arrive. Same goes for all the other Ld checks you'll be needing to make throughout the game.... Maybe 2 units of 9 would be a bit more robust than 3 of 6...?

I could see a small unit of 15 Stormvermin working quite well in the role previously reserved for the RO (though I've used SV this way back in 6th as well), but it depends quite a bit on some other aspects of how the final list shakes out.

I believe Throt only allows you to take 2 units of Rat Ogres as core choices. Not a major problem here, but just thought it needed to be pointed out...

As for the idea, Ive been a fan of Rat Ogres for a long time, and the ability to field more in an army is just spectacular. I am not a big fan of Throt however, but I dont usually take other Special choices, so the Rat Ogres could just as easily go here for me. I am also looking forward to trying a Rat Ogre Horde, deployed 6 by 3. It would eat up a lot of points, but Id love to see Rat Ogres marauding through the enemy lines ^_^

I would think it would do good if you tried out the Monsterous Horde rule...I forget what it's exactly about but I've heard it's pretty awesome.
