The rules are a little different in 8th, it specifically states now that unless your army book has a different rule Poison applies to all of a models attacks including shooting and close combat. However it specifies now that any magic attacks do not gain the benefit of poison. So no more poisoned Weeping blades or poisoned warpstone stars.

Strength boosting potions combined with High I and ASF could make good character killers.

I would actually agree, I think the Weeping blade plus the poition of strength make a perfect Character killer as well as an effective monster killer. But the really good thing is that Assassins in general now have just a ton of options with the basic items in 8th.

that can make for some awesome overkill in 8th then, asf high int assassin with potion of strength and weeping blade. reroll hits with poison armor piercing and d3 wounds. presuming there is still overkill???
Assassin kill toll: 1 oldblood, 1 vampire lord, 2 chaos lords, Bretonnian lord, 3 Minotaurs and numerous champions with overkill. An ever growing list!

Again you can't get poison anymore with the Weeping blade. Any attack that is magical can't be poisoned. Weeping blade has magical attacks.

Reroll to hit is better than poison anyways, so I'll take that. :P

still feel thats what our assassins missed out on. good old choice of some poisons. but then again we don't have 75pt limit that elf assassins do

Yeah but everything in the Dark Elf book is underpriced look at the bloody hydra for gods sake! At least in 8th ed breath weapons are only one shot only!

but aren't breath weapons usable in combat now? just to make dragons nastier?

DE assassins aren't even close to as good as the skaven assassin in 8th. DE assassins can get much better at killing rank and file pretty easily, but with step up, being T3 2W is a big drawback. Skaven assassins have T4 4+ ward and have access to tools which are much better at character hunting, I think skaven characters have better tools now. Challenges to protect your characters will be huge, and skaven assassins have the tools to take out most any hero level character with a decent success rate. With potion of strength and weeping blades, most lords would be wary of fighting an assassin.

Breath weapons are usable in combat for 2d6 hits, but with no partials they're better to use outside combat, and breath weapons are all one use only now.

not denying it... I've written a assassin into my list for up coming 8th
an extra Int or two couldn't of gone astray though. surely if they are so good at "dodging" they would require a little higher Int to dodge...

The new magic items + ASF rules are a much needed second wind to our assassins. Not to mention thanks to the assassins plethora of deployment options he can get all these new nasties to where they need to be! 8D

For example the enchanted item that gives you the bound fireball spell combined with the assassins infiltrate rules would be fantastic at taking out war machines.

Yeah, as far as big stuff/lord slayer. Strength potion + weeping blade is amazing. As for a hero slayer/rank and file killer, tail weapon + Shard (All models in base contact (friend and foe) need to re-roll successful saves) is fantastic and very versatile. Night runners, slaves, and gutter runners do not really suffer from losing saves, and if two clan rats/storm vermin lose their 5+ save... big deal.

4 str 4 and 1 str 3 poisoned attacks that re-roll to hit and force the enemy to re-roll saves is fantastic. Does not lose his extra attack or poison and only costs 143pts.

As for the ruby ring of fire I'm assuming you can cast all the fireball variants with it:

Basic Spell: Fireball: Magic Missile
D6 S4 hits 24" range
2D6 S5 hits 36" range
3D6 S6 hits 48" range

(warlock + ruby ring... lol at 40pt wizzard)
