After a long time of not bothering with WHFB I returned to my wonderful verminous little children, lured back by the fantastic looking new models. I still have a few rests of my old skaven army lying around but its really just two units of old clan rats and a chieftain, and I'm probably going to leave them where they are, considering their dog-monkey like shapes, instead i will entirely replace them with more current models. However a lot of the still-in-use models are quite old and still do have those faces that look rather like ugly dogs than rats, that I am so glad that they vanished from the youngest generation models. Their bodies are mostly acceptable, not having those monkeyish proportions of the old plastic rats. So what I want to do is to get my whole army to be up to the aesthetic standard of the newest skaven models, without only using units that actually got new models. Currently I'm planning to just remove most models heads and replace them with those of the current clan rats models. Well, the content of this thread should be to collect ideas and inspiration on how to convert all those old models to make them look more like the current ones. Warp firethrower teams might have to be built entirely from scratch, because the models for those are so old and out of date I just wont bother with them. What I've already figured out how to do, will be to use the plastic grey seer from the screaming bell set on a regular base for a grey seer on foot. Also instead of the verminlord I will most certainly use the Necromunda Rat God that serves as the mount for the Caller (I might add the characteristic four horns to make it more fitting). Night runners will probably be just taken from accordingly dressed clan rat models with some minor changes to their equipment, and similarly gutter runners will be converted with some other extras to differentiate them from night runners. Plague monks are quite okay as long as there are enough hooded heads. Rat ogres and giant rats shouldnt be bothered with i will just take them as they come and probably improve them with green stuff and some bits. (though preferably I'd like to get my shaggy claws on the last metal predecessors, which I think were the best incarnation of rat ogres so far) So any inspiration and ideas on how to convert all of the older models still in use is welcome. Sample pictures especially.

I don't see why you'd use the new clanrat heads for old clanrat bodies, that sounds like you'll just destroy the new good models to barely patch up your old clanrats. May I suggest using plague monk heads or something instead? You should have some of those left over, and you may get some right arms from the new clanrats.

Yeah, the new Clanrats come basically in 3 pieces, the right arm, the shield, and a piece with everything else included. So ordering new clanrat heads is pretty much impossible. |

im not doing anything with the old clanrats, im just going to leave them in a box and replace them entirely. What I am talking about is updating the models for other units that are still sold as the current ones, but are quite old already. Like for example weapon teams, warlocks, censer bearers and so on. It doesnt even have to be a head-exchange, if possible and sensible I might also replace the entire body. |

I'd say the discrepancy between the weapon-teams and the current models aren't too bad, and if you want Night Runners that aren't the monkey-mice, there' plenty of appropriate parts in the new kit. |

I'm using entirely new plastics for all my Skaven apart from My warlord and giant rats, I'll need to post some pics in a mutate but I've done the following: scratch built warp lightning cannons out of a kit of stephenson's "rocket", plasticard & random bitz & bobs from the bead section of my local craft shop, Marauder flails fit v nicely on plastic clanrats for plague censer bearers, you need to shorten the staff on a few of them but its nothing a new scalpel blade, some patience & some poly cement can't handle. Jezzail teams I've scratch built the pavise from plasticard while the Jezzails themselves are pewter cast napoleonic rifles from a doll's house shop in town with a significantly chopped down stock. I will be making plague monks out of the new clanrats too, I've already isolated 5 bodies per kit that have robes & no visible armour although I'll admit the 2nd hand weapon in the 'shield-arm' is going to be tricky. Warlock engineers and plague priests are going to be made from converted stormvermin and packmasters are simple normal clanrats with the whip arm from the corpse cart necromancer replacing a spear hand. dead easy. The Giant rats I ordered from these fine chaps Otherworld Miniatures they're listed as dungeon vermin and the jezzails were ordered from here Miniature Scene although their website appears to be a tad fooked. |

elplebian, those sound very nice I'd really love to see some picture, if you can whip some up some time. Im probably going to order a pair of battleforce boxes some time soon (which is my traditional way to (re-)start an army) and I'll examine the Clan rat sprues for their possibilities. |

Well heres some Work in progess shots of one of my Warp lightning cannons, the other one is pretty much identical, maybe a shorter barrel & a longer smokestack but thats all ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This obviously is just at the barest of flat basecoat standard, still lots to do. I've got a nice lens to go onthe end of the rat-o-matic super killy telepomascope sight too. I'll be putting something in the other crewmans paw too but as of yet I haven't the foggiest on what so I'll keep people posted if theyd like. |
