2k warlord hammer galore; wal-mart rats, beware

Hello! I had this funny idea, which is of course a double edged sword, but could work. Now, I'm not very into powergaming, but for me, just to fill my points up i have to either use my 6th ed clanrat units ( which normally goes under the slave tag ) as clanrats (funny enough  ) or stormvermin to get enough models on and then they stop being expandable (point wise) or leave big gaps or take stuff i don't want to. (My playgroup is very limited, and the general house rule is that as long as the base is the same size, and you keep track of what is supposed to be what (generally made easy with diff chars put in them) then thats fine.)

I most often meet Lizardmen, Vampire counts, Dark Elves.

1999p, PD 4, DD 3

Warlord unit: 762 p

Warlord - 258p
+General
+Shield
+Fellblade
+Ogre

30 Stormvermin - 290
+shield
+full command
+banner of the under empire

Cheiftain - 70p
+shield
+halberd
+Portents of verminous doom

Cheiftain - 144p
+shield
+halberd
+BSB
+sacred banner of the horned rat

Now, this is one very pointheavy unit! It's main purpose is being a really pimped out bodyguard unit.

Portents of verminous doom and sacred banner combo, and the banner of the under empire as a cherry (albeit an very much over the top one, have been thinking about putting a warbanner in there instead, or just simply taking it off)

This is the most protected unit guarded by the slave blocks and will be a key unit until or if the fellblade lord feels to go making kebab out of stuff himself.

Flanks ofcourse quite make this setup a bit dumb. The -2 LD is still quite handy though, and the sheilds are mainly for to hard to handle units/shooting.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plague priest unit: 619p

Plague priest - 334p
+flail
+lvl 2
+Scrying stone
+Shadow magnet
+Plague furnace

Plague Priest unit:
30 Plaguemonks - 285p
+full command
+Stormbanner

Another pointsink! The basic idea is that while they are heavily pointheavy, they do their job, and with the 2 big point units and the 2 killy rares, then which one to concentrate on?
Now, this will be a full frontal charge unit guarded only by 2-3 giant rat packs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other units: 589p

20 slaves x 3 - 120p - cannon fodder for the warlord unit, flankers

5 giantrats x 3 - 69p - cannon fodder for the plague priest unit, flankers
+packmaster

1 Hell pit Abomination - 250p - draws attention
+warpstone spikes

1 Doomwheel - 150p - draws attention

-

Opinions?

Err, I don't know. I mean your warlord is very vulnerable. Against a DE assassin he would probably die before ever getting an attack, and the unit would probably break and get cut down. LM or vampires it would maybe work better, if you never get charged by any hard hitters.

If you are going the all your eggs in one basket approach I would kit the warlord out to survive and the heros out to deal damage. The warlord is going to get targetted.

Very risky against undead to go in with no dispel dice or scrolls. I think you would be fighting a very uphill battle with this list.

I have a horrible image of a chaos guy casting infernal gateway on your warlord unit and then rolling 11 or 12 for strength :o :(

Mind you, I can't criticise, at 3K I plan on having a bell seer, Ikit, 3 warlocks, and a BSB all in one SV unit (what is that, 1500pt unit?). Then I just wait for the first miscast :P

It's not an optimal build but there are alot of scary things going around with cheap screen units. Could switch out the portents cheiftain for a lvl 2 warlock with a scroll as well, but I'd have to shred some points somewhere else though, which really wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not really concerned with the warlord surviving. I find that what kills me most against Vampire Counts is the long combats. Where i start with a big sized unit, get caught with skeletons and they cut me down slowly until they win by outnumbering. Blood knights are prime target for the HPA, which has done quite the heroic number on them before.

The warlord builds I've come up with seems to be to far to defensive. Example:

warlord - 225p
+warlitter
+weeping blade
+enchanted shield
+rival hide talisman
+skalm
+poisoned attacks

2+ armorsave, healthpotion and a re-roll talisman.

If I'm not totally wrong poison and the weeping blade works together, and i know the warlitter does not get the effect but thats fine.

Now, I've seen some people going for the Warlock-Augmented blade, but for it's points i don't think it's worth it unless it boosts the mount (obviously only pox rat and ogre) but on the same time, that would be quite unbalanced as well. The wording on it seems to imply that it does grant it's bonus to the mount aswell (to any model so equipped instead of every other item in the book giving its bonus to weilder or bearer i can see it fluff wise, not that it matters.)

The Scavenge Pile poison does not work in conjunction with magical weapons.

hi,

i recently had a 2k game against o&g's, where i took a similar unit:

30 sv
same unit std, cheiftain with same army std, but rather than the portents on a second character i had queek and beefed up the sv to uber sv, these guys are tough, i should be playing a 5k match on sunday vs dwarves, am figuring sv with ws5, str4+halberds and I5 will put the thumbscrews on the dwarf things, i'm definately looking forward to using the uber unit again at the weekend.
when cooking halflings, i advise beginning on a low temperature for a long time, this way you seal in the juices!!!

I was afraid of that, good that i got that settled :). Good i haven't tested it yet then :D. Also i won't be using the Warlock-augmented blade, simply out of disgust i guess. If it doesn't have effect X then i think its to weak, and if it does then its to powerful :P. Which kinda tells me its better to stick to something else.

This list isn't intended to win any tournaments, so i was trying to come up with something a bit different (not using my beloved PCB's) without ripping someones list of :).

Mutate: Yes, the Queek bodyguard setup x30 works wonder. I did that aswell against my DE opponent, but she utterly trashed it before it saw combat, mainly a fault of mine though. Those bolters and horses and everything with a bow really shoots really hard, and HA and shield doesn't help much. They didn't kill the unit though, it just never went into combat because it fled :(.

That's my Giant Rat Special character Smuchy, Grimgor killer! I know I'm not that good of a painter, but oh well, its fun to share :)

Small piece of cheese and warpstone to the one who can guess how he got his name ;)

I just think if I were going to field the fell blade, which I am terribly afeared to do, that I would want some kind of protection there for my warlord. At the least I would stick an assassin in his unit to protect him from a charge. With a champ + assassin you could probably shield him enough so that he can use the fellblade on whatever you want to kill before he dies.

The stormlord vermin does contain a ordinary champion, 1 bsb and one that can be changed (assassin seems good though, i agree.) so it does not have to answer any challanges :). Never used the fellblade during 6th, so i guess i want to try it in 7th, just in spite.

I'm sort of happy/sad about 7th still, i mean, would it be to much to ask for to just have mr vetock copy and paste the rules for things that wasn't going to change? I guess rationalle is out of the window :/ (don't try to make sense of it, friday night, whisky (smashed and brewed warpstone), etc)

I like to give my assassin something that ignores armor saves as opposed to extra attacks so that he helps out a ton against a cavalry charge.
