Hi! I've been around on the forums a little bit, but i've never knocked up a list before so i was wondering on people opinions. As a beginner i'm using the battalion box to start and im going to head off in a very mouldery army direction after i get going.......

anyway heres my first go at around 1000 points Its not complete since im looking at a bit more advice really to get going but heres the general idea

Heroes:

Chieftan - (Planning to use that one with 2 hand weps off the website) Any ideas on good loadout? Better to make my own than use this one?

Warlock Engineer - Warp Energy Condenser

Core:

Clanrats x 20

Clanrats x 20

Giant Rats x 6 - 2 packmasters

Night Runners x 15

Stormvermin x 20

Special

Rat Ogres x 2 - 1 packmaster

Plague Monks x 20

Gutter Runners x 5

Rare

Hellpit Abomination

Mutate: Adjusted a few details with packmasters
also would like to state that since i have some night runners already i would like to use them

Don't forget to list your packmasters too - and any unit upgrades. (e.g. standard, musicians, champions, etc.)

Personally I don't really like Night runners, unless you're looking for an Eshin-style list, or are trying something unusual with slings. As you indicate you prefer Moulder, I wouldn't take these.

Your blocks (monks, clanrats, SV) will all work better in units of 25 rather than 20, since they can take a few casualties and still keep their rank bonus - doubly important for us, since we add it to leadership too.

As for chieftains, if you want to use a model with 2 hand weapons, I'd give it an extra hand weapon, maybe a tail weapon, and poisoned attacks. If you want to add some protection, the rival hide talisman or the scrying stone are both reasonable choices.

I agree with Lord Pox about numbers. Also it's important you get your big ranked units standards and musicians. Clanrats don't win combat on killing, they win it on ranks, standard and outnumber.
Pox's idea for Chieftain equipping sounds good, but I will point out the Scrying Stone is an arcane item, so only a wizard can take it.

Quite right - I'm obviously still overexcited after reading through the new FAQ ;)

I tend to take plague priests over chieftains, so I was posting from memory, sorry; I'll go get my book!

After looking through my list with the book to hand i've found its closer to 1500 points so here it is reviewed.

Heroes

Chieftan - 2 hand weapons, tail weapon, poison, worlds edge armour

Warlock - lv 1, dispel scroll, warp energy condenser

Core

Clanrats x 30 - shields, command

Clanrats x 30 - shields, command

Giant Rats x 6 - 2 packmasters

Night Runners x 15 - slings

Special

Rat Ogre x 2 - Packmaster

Plague monks x 20 - Command

Gutter Runners x 5

Comes to 972 as i make it, peoples suggestions?

I don't think a condensor is worth it if you only have 1 lvl 1 caster. You would be better putting those points towards level 2 in my opinion.

There is also an issue as to whether 2 packmasters with 6 giant rats is legal - it depends upon how you read "may add one packmaster per 5 giant rats"
To be on the safe side, I wouldn't take 2 until you have 10 giant rats.

Your monks is still only a 20 strong block - I'd drop clanrat numbers a bit to get this up to 25.

I still don't like 15 night runners with slings, but that's your call :) I'd rather spend the points on a cannon or something instead.

Lastly, you don't have any slave blocks. I know these don't look good on paper, but they have so many tactical uses, you will love them once you get a bit of experience with them. Well worth freeing up the points for a couple of units of those (those night runner points, for example :) )

Heroes

Chieftan - 2 hand weapons, tail weapon, poison, worlds edge armour

Plague Priest - lv 1, dispel scroll (wondering what would suit him?)

Core

Clanrats x 30 - shields, command

Clanrats x 30 - shields, command

Giant Rats x 6 - Packmaster

Night Runners x 15 - slings

Special

Rat Ogre x 2 - Packmaster

Plague monks x 20 - Command, (Banner of verminous scurrying ?)

Gutter Runners x 5

979

Might take a plague priest, eventually to be placed on the apparently moulder pox rat. This means im not branching quite into all 4 clans now.....

I'm going to stick with no slaves just for now cos im low on funds and such, but i will definately get lots of slaves in there some point!

I was wondering on the banner to rush in the priests later, possibly if i move towards all (or almost all) M6 units?

Also, i thought that you could have 1 packmaster and 6 since its in the pics, but you're correct! On closer reading it appears 10 are needed before i can get the 2nd so i'll correct that now!

Thanks to all your help so far guys, i really appreciate it :)

I'm a big fan of a Flail and a Scrying Stone. Both are quite cheap and they make a very efficient killer who is remarkably well protected for an unarmored character.

Could work. Personally I'm partial to the Shroud of Dripping Death. It helps the Monks get through armor, because they don't do well against good armor saves.

Yes, to both of PL's reccomendations.

My monks always have the SoDD. That's 2-3 armor ignoring autohits a turn and makes on average 1-2 casualties! (depending on how good your to-wound rolls are)

Drop the world's edge armour and bumb your PM up to 25. Also try to find a way to fit in the plague banner. That thing decimated whole blocks of infantry.
Darn Skaven addiction..., darn money shortage...
