So yeah. Playing a game this Saturday against a joint army of dwarves and brettonians. I've considered an army and will be posting it up here to see what people's thoughts are, possible improvements, flaws and other such things. Heroes Warlock Engineer - Level 2, Warp-Power Accumilator Assassin - Warpstone Stars Core 3x 20 Clanrats with Shields, Spears and Full Command 20 Stormvermin with Shields, Full Command and Shroud of Dripping Death Special 15 Gutter Runners with Poisoned Attacks 4 Rat Ogres with Master-Bred Rat Ogre and Master Moulder with Electro Whip Rare Doomwheel I have my thoughts and I believe that the Warlock Engineer, with the many blocks of troops will be able to hold the line reletively well, with the Rat Ogres and a Doomwheel to show support. The Stormvermin will be able to hold most enemies with the Shroud, including heavily armoured Knights due to it not allowing saves, and the numbers, coupled with magic I could churn out could work, providing there are no enemy wizards or runepriests (I believe they were going to go with the Paladin and Thane. The Gutter Runners and Assassin should easily be able to silence enemy guns or whittle down ranged units to get my troops closer to the enemy, as well as harrass the Knights, perhaps, to belittle them before they get to my army. Thoughts, anyone? |

Okay, I'm seeing a couple troubling things. First, numbers. Minimum size clanrat blocks lose their rank bonus too quickly to shooting/combat. I'd boost all 3 units by 5 each, maybe the Stormvermin too. Dropping the spears should help. Between Dwarf units with their main combat blocks having 3+ armor in close combat, and Brettonian Knights better than that, it's pointless to think you'll kill anybody, if you win it will be on sheer mass of numbers, because you will have them outnumbered. Forget the Warlock Engineer's magic. The Dwarf army starts with 4 Dispel Dice without any Rune Priests. Two level two casters might still struggle to do much against that, a single Warlock will be lucky to get a spell through the entire game. If you want the Engineer hand him a Doomrocket, that thing can punch a hole clear through the opposing lines. The points saved on his magic levels would pay for the clanrat size boosts. Seeing as you've got that many Gutter Runners I'd split them into two units. There is little that one big group can do that each smaller squad wouldn't do just as well. And you'll be able to run them on two separate missions, silence twice the guns per turn. |

Alright. So perhaps replace the Warlock Engineer with a Chieftain armed with, say, a Great Weapon and use the points spare to bring up the Clanrat units? As the hero needs to be there to be the general anyway. Are the Warpstone Stars worth it for the assassin? I figured it would work quite well for chewing through Knights and killing those heroes or multiple wound models that leave the safety of their units. Replacing this with something else might give up enough points to boost one of the Clanrats even further, though I still consider the strength 5 hits of the assassin a bonus. Is the Shroud of Dripping Death more worth it than the Stormbanner in this instance, though I suppose it depends on exactly how many guns my opponent uses. Thanks for the reply

The other big advantage of a cheiftain over a WE is the extra point of leadership on your general, which is not to be underestimated. I would also give serious thought to including some of the stuff which ignores armour saves, since this is a strength of both dwarves and bret knights. I also wouldn't run 4 rat ogres with only one packmaster, even if it is upgraded to a MM. An extra packmaster here is cheap insurance. Warpstone stars are one way to make an assassin effective, but they restrict how you can use him a bit, and he's costly. You anwered your own question about the banners
