I'm setting out to make a Display board for my rats. Anyone know of any good how-to/walkthroughs for making these?

I've been tooling through the hobby tunnels and watching verious videos on youtube and I'm starting to get an idea of how to go about it, but any annecdotal pointers or tips yall have would be greatly appreciated. If you've bought or made your own and don't mind have your creative work mimicked, feel free to post links/picts too.

I'm mainly worried about:

Materials I should be using; the cheaper the better.

Tools I should be using;

Timeframe I should expect; (will an average board take a weekend or 3 months to complete?), I'm anticipating having it ready for March 13.

Thnx all;

Depending on your work ethic it could probably be done in a weekend. There was an article on the old GW site about it but I cant find it now (dont know what army it was for and dont want to go through them all). I remember they used washers and magnets to make the bases fit on and be removable (was 40k).

Other than that I cant be much help, sorry.

Awesome, thanx GS, where'd you find the board/ pink foam at and about how much was it per sheet?

I'm thinking of doing a smaller 2'x2.5' board and using gravel/flock and maybe a few left over trees that I never use anymore.

I've made several.

The one I did for Skaven was just many layers of corrugated carboard with torn ("chewed") edges, glued on top of each other for thickness & strength, then flocked on top. I alternated the direction of the corrugation to avoid warping. (It was the first one I did, so I had to borrow it for my Empire army before I built a more appropriate one.)

Another was simply a piece of 1/4" hardboard cut to size, with a 1/4" piece of foamcore on top of it. The top was then flocked to match my bases. The edges were finished with decorative wood trim that was painted gold, then washed black to give it an antique look.

A third one was a cabinet door someone was throwing away. I left the outer frame wood, but flocked the central panel. I don't seem to have a completed photo of it, but here's what it looked like before I started.

I got the pink stuff from Lows for about $10 for a 4x8 sheet. It's very easy to work with. You should definitely go with a smaller board. Mine was 3x2 and it was WAY to big for the venue. I just cut a foot off of it.

@zerotwentythree- Awesome army at the RTT. Love the scratch built a-bomb. Really inspired me to keep working on my stuff.

Awesome stuff. I really like the accent border you've put on your outter edge 23. Is that a purchased molding or did you make it somehow?

I should have started this project last month, they just tore all of the old cabinets out of our kitchen and scrapped them, I probably could have used one of the doors! :(

I'll have to head over to HomeDepot/Lowes sometime this week and pick a sheet up, gotta grab some stuff for the house anyways this'll be my opt. to throw a few extra things in the cart without MrsCap catching wise :D

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to keep yall posted on my progress.

Gift from my brother. Layers of thick pink foam, cut very "hack&slash" with an Xacto. Scratch off the edges some more, and the sculpture is done! For the paint, I can only assume he used dollorama-types of brushes and paints and did drybrushes of dark and medium grays. I did something similar with green for about 2$ on a modular table.

For a sand/dirt look, which would more suit a tunnel, I've seen 2 people dry up sand for a while (like you'd use for basing, but in huge quantity and very very dry). Then apply a whole lot of glue (white wood glue?) and let it dry some more. Probably shake&brush to remove the not-glued-enough sand, and continue adding sand layers the same way until you get the desired consistency. I think. I haven't tried it myself, just kept on eye on people doing it.

Alright, I've picked up the pink board and cut it into two 4'x3' pieces and one 4'x2' piece.

I'm going to get the final layout for my units using paper cut-outs taped in place for a visual, to figure out what dimensions I need the board to be. Then it'll be a matter of getting it glued down to a piece of equal sized cut 1/2" wood and grinding out the holes and building up some hills.

cupboard doors!! make really good display bases.
get from diy shops, the ones with the shaped edges, then get a sheet of mdf and cut it to shape and that makes the scenic bit of the base.....decorared how you like.
sounds weird but it really works

The image function in the post creation section, but it does require a weblink, people typically use their photobucket, etc. accounts.

I've got a 3 level board, 2' x 3'. It is mostly painted, now I just need to do a few touchups and then hopefully glue some flock/gravel/terrain down and it'll be set for saturday!
