To be fair, I find the ratling far more balanced. Firstly, the 3" range bonus has already meant so much to me, I am almost glad for it. Secondly, while rolling to hit is a drag, it suffers no penalties, so it is at least reasonable. Also, in our previous book it had only a pitiful 6+ save to protect its 60-odd points investment, wheras now it might survive the occasional enemy's stern glance. Lastly, its cheap.

In the last book I found the ratling gun was unbalanced: for two or three games in a row I wouldn't get a single hit with it, and then that one time I did hit it shredded an entire unit, provoking many cries of cheese.

Well i already had 4 ratling guns left from the old days and no WFT so ive been using them for that reson.

They are the 'safer' option in my book as a weapon team. far less likely to go boom if they misfire and you have guarenteed distance of fire mking it fareasier to use them stragically, such as mention before, smoking march blokers.

rolling to hit is bummer but you dont suffer penalties so they usually hit on 4, that still 50% of your hits, and fortunatly i have habit of rolling a 6 then a 5, that 11 shot, hitting with 5/6 shots. not too shabby.

ill proberly trade them for the WTF or flayer later on but im in no rush to remove them

the biggest thing a ratter has compared to the other shooting weapon teams is that the ratter can get more hits than the amount of models in the unit.
Giving better odds to actually whipe out small units of fast cavalry for example (which in my book is their prime target).
Also heroes on mounts would probably fear a ratter more than a WFT/PWM.

In my very first game, I shot out a Khorne Lord's Juggernaut from under him with a ratling gun, and that was without remembering that they suffer no penalty for firing over half range!

I'd say they are still very worth it. B)
