i have played with them (small games) and against them... bigger games. they are a good army. very potent if you are good at guessing ranges and know how to play well... also most of their magic negates MR you can restore wounds to any unit. they have decent special and rare slots their magic is fantastic...

HOWEVER... they will have a new army book released in the next 6 - 12 months... whether you want to buy some before then is up to you. but the same things you really like about them now may not exist in their next edition. if you dont care and just love them for the egyptian feel :D it is cool. then go ahead. they are hard to play with and refuse to play any game under 1500 points. lol... trust me. having to take 2 heros that cost at base more than 200 points in 1000 point game is kinda a disadvantage especially when your core troops are fairly dear and not very effective.

I play mine under 1k but it's not as fun. Under 1k i found the way for me to win reliably is to make a gunlineish army that just counter charges with a chariot unit, takes out warmachines with a scorpion and spams catapult and archer shots and preys they do some damage.

here in australia and nz tks are placed in tier 2 along with the new skaven, wood elves, lizards and brets. They are still a really competitive army.

TK are very useful. There are a few broken units people usually dont take, such as the cav, the BSB hero, sometimes ushabti (though they are the best models in the range IMO)

The TK magic is hard. It always casts. Especially the extra movement spells. If you cast extra movement on carrion birds, you can charge your opponents artillery line on turn 1. Free reform banner on the tomb guard is a must, the fly cloak and the hieratic jar is also a must on your hierophant. Anything else is pretty much up to you. They're very competetive still, it's all about item combinations, deployment and good tactics though. They're not as hard as many of the new armies, but they're not a bottom tier army for sure.

As mentioned several times, Tomb Kings are a good army. The reasons why you don't see them around much at the moment is

a ) They get smashed by the top armies
b ) You need to be a very good player to do well with them
c ) Have a very good grasp on the movement rules

if all of this is true (not saying it isn't) is there any website/forum for TK tactics? my TK friend thinks of playing DoC unitll the new TK book is ou but he really likes TK, we both think they are seriously underpowered. it would be nice to have a place for him to read tactics etc since they are really fun to play with/against even with min 215 points in characater and 8 pts core
It would be ugly to watch people poking sticks at a caged rat. It is uglier still to watch rats poking sticks at a caged person.

Your best bet is to download the Heelanhammer Podcast and listen to some of the older episodes. Russ Veal did very well with Tomb Kings at the South Coast GT earlier this year and Dan chats to Russ about his list and games. Another one is VaulTK who has made loads of YouTube reports about his antics with Tomb Kings - http://warhammer.org.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=54860

Best Advice though is play as many games as possible against as many different people as possible. You may loose the first 20 odd games but slowly you will start picking up hints and tips. Also try sticking to the same list for around 10 games rather than changing it every time. ;)

TK are probably the most "reliable" army in Warhammer and as such they depend even moreso on the skill of the general. They can be extremely powerful but not in the hands of most players.

I think they're written off as a "weak" army simply because VC are a much easier force to play and seem worse by comparison. They won't be seen much in comps and will win even less but they're by no means at the bottom of the pile.
