In the Netherlands, there is a games convention held four times a year, which is the Ducosim Spellenbeurs. It is here that a Dutch online miniature wargaming community hosts various tournaments and demonstration games. Someone from that community had enthusiastically (sp?) gathered a bunch of players to participate in a small Blood Bowl tournament, which of course included yours truely. So, after having had quite a discussion on what team to take (I believe I've considered all the teams I had), I ended up bringing my Lizardmen team. As I would be taking over a Pro Elf team at the convention, I was in doubt whether I'd be taking that one, but as the seller was caught up in traffic, I eventually began playing with my Lizardmen team. The first match was against SirSebstar, who had joined me towards the tournament and had brought his Wood Elves. This match ended up in a tight draw. He had a touchdown early on in the first half. As I was receiving, we eventually got a scattering ball around the line of scrimmage that ended up in the hands of my Kroxigor. "Great", I thought. A S5 big guy against which fairly little can be done, other then throwing an awful lot of players against it... Of course, then I don't need failing the Bonehead rolls three turns in a friggin' row. <_< Really, for three turns in a row he just didn't do a thing! In the second half, I eventually got the ball and around turn three, while I stood at the line of scrimmage, I casually said "Ah well, five turns to go". Well, I needed those, badly. Seriously, despite their AV7, Wood Elves seem to be a devil to get off the pitch. Still, the Wardancer as a casualty was great fun and as I scored the 1-1 at the 8th turn, Seb had to set up for a one-turn touchdown. *grins*... Of course, I set up in a way he absolutely did not anticipate on and we ended up at a 1-1 draw with 1-4 in casualties. The match could have gone two ways, but I think the end result was a fair one. The following match was against Dick-Jan (one of the employees on a former school I was at), who had brought Norse to the tournament. Now when playing a team that has stunties in them, Norse (consisting almost entirely of players with the Block skill) is one of the teams you do not like facing. Then again, their AV7 makes them worth trying to knock down. Especially if you've got a player in your team with Mighty Blow. I have to say that during the match I had my fair amount of good dice rolls (even with the series of team re-rolls used). A great deal of players went off the pitch on injury rolls of nine and if you're facing a team with one Krox and six Sauri, it's a bit hard to pull off a win when half your team is not on the pitch. Despite that, the game was pretty fun to participate in and we ended up with a 2-0 win with 4-2 in casualties. Now at that point, Seb was facing an Orc player that was giving him a fair beating on the casualty count. Regarding the score, Seb was doing his 'few man Wood Elf show' consisting on loads of touchdowns in his favour. (Despite the fact he lost his Treeman on turn one  ). However, the Orc player was eagerly sizing my team up, hoping for a match against me and I've got to tell you, in all those years of playing Blood Bowl (and that's quite a few), Orcs are the one team I despise playing against. The tournament setups of a Troll, four Black Orcs, four Blitzers and a Thrower (with a bit to fill up the remainder) gives me shivers... So, of course, I had to go up against the guy who organized the tournament and had brought Chaos Dwarfs. SWEET. A Minotaur, two Bull Centaurs and four Chaos Dwarfs with Block and *shudder*... Tackle. <_< Having played his previous match against Halflings, he was quite confident, having made no less then TEN (!!!) casualties. Still, the match eventually was about nothing. I gave the guy a lesson in humility, as despite him getting some of my players knocked down and stunned, one after the other of his team went off towards the dead & injured box. My dice rolls were on FIRE! By halftime, he was five guys down (including his Minotaur and a Bull Centaur). The eventual score was 4-0 in my favour with 7-1 in casualties. Yes, I know. Those are numbers you don't see often coming from a Lizardmen team. I can only say that it surprised him as much as it surprised me. Eventually, I was second overall. I had the same tournament score as Seb, but he had made more touchdowns then I had. For the Most TDs award, I was second as well, as Seb was playing Wood Elves and well... Duh. The Most CAS award was a tight one, as I ended up as second there as well. Before we went into the third half, the Chaos Dwarf player was in the lead with 10 casualties in two rounds, followed by an Orc player with 8 casualties and myself with 5 casualties. Of course, if the Orc player makes four casualties (against Seb) in ONE round, there's little you can do against it. He ended up on a tally of thirteen casualties, whereas I got stuck on twelve. Still, I got the 'twijfelkont' award, which was due to having considered playing eight teams and using about sixteen/ seventeen posts before finally deciding on my team. *grins*... THAT one definitely gave us all a good laugh. Greetz |
