Grey Seer
|
To decapitate, or not to decapitate a classic model, that is the question! I have a loverly old warlock engineer model, holding a warplock pistol and pointing with the other hand. I'm sure there is a picture on Stuff of Legends somewhere. Anyway, he has ram horns on his head, which I take it these days is a look reserved for Grey Seers only. Is this really so? Should I care? I desperately want to convert this guy to a warlock with a Doom Rocket and a Warp Energy Condenser, and have been debating swapping out his head. Not sure what do to, so I am just throwing it out there to you folks for comments - WWTHRD? |

Any Skaven could have horns really, just don't give him white fur. Even so, with there being so many millions upon millions of Skaven and so many of them mutated in some way, at some point or another there are going to be some with horns. The mark of a Grey Seer is the white fur and horns together, that's when they get whiskered away for GS training. Of course, it's your model, paint him any way you want at all! There must be some Grey Seers in training who like the look of Warlock tech, they can't all be born level 4 wizards and they must have something to do to keep them entertained

Even if you just use him as a warlock games-wise, there's nothing to say that he isn't a Grey Seer apprentice with a hankering for guns to augment his fledgling powers. Keep the horns, or sell the model to me, but please don't murder that classic! |

I'd stick with the apprentice idea but using warlock engineer rules, thought of the very same thing myself after finish reading the Grey Seer novel, having a sneaky apprentice for my upcoming Grey Seer. |

I painted up that model just the other week, for use as an engineer. I gave him brown fur, and didn't do anything as cruel as cutting off his horns. We have literary examples of skaven mutating and growing horns as adults, and that doesn't turn them into grey seers. |

Is there anywhere printed that they are only for Grey Seers? I know white fur and horns signifies status as a Grey Seer but I'm sure there have been examples of lesser Skaven either growing them or being born with them. For one, Blood Bowl allows them as a mutation for all Skaven. I now that's hardly indicative of current Skaven lore but it's the same universe and all...

the vermin lord has horns and its not a grey seer. i know he is a demon and nullifies this argument but you get the point. |

The plague Monks on the furnace have... "horns..." granted they're not as neat as grey seer-ram horns, but I wouldn't be surprised if other models mutated horns as well. Engineers are basically strapping warpstone to their body, no? |

The old plague monk champions had very neat "GS-Style" horns. I think it has become something of a retcon issue. Previously, horns were more common, although often a distinguishing mark of leadership. In recent editions, they seem to be confined to grey seers. I say just take the most convenient adapatation. For example, the fluff has for years said that magic use was limited to Grey Seers and Clan Skryre...well lo and behold every single plague priest is now a wizard. |

Don't like the high-tech on the skaven models much myself so have 2 of those you mention as warlock engineers always =) Also got the old Rat Ogres that don't have bits and pieces of metal from every extremity but good old fashioned teeths and claws. Do not take of those horns and an idea that I use is to paint the outstreched arm in different shades of grreen from darker at his shoulder to almost white at his fingertip to represent the warp-lightning he uses the most. Looks pretty good on that piece of model even from my standard as not so good painter...=) It's a model for a game really so don't have it mutated just because of the horns and use it as it is or at least don't destroy it just because =) |
