I Am The Monster
|
i've been thinking about getting into LOTR battle game(the skirmish one, not war of the ring), and i've got a couple questions. 1- i can't seem to find anything about it online(other than the GW website obviously), does anyone know of a LOTR forum? 2- how expensive is it to get into. no one i know plays it, so i'd be responsible for getting 2 armies worth of miniatures(small ones), and the rules. so if it costs much more than 100$ american(at used prices), it's not going to happen. 3- easy for beginners? i've been thinking about using it as an intro to wargaming, since i am constantly finding myself teaching the game to new people i would like a game that has a slightly gentler learning curve than fantasy. 4- models, are they any good? painting is a large part of the game for me, especially if the army is something i have seen and heard a lot about in books and movies(seen the trilogy twice, and read the books 2 and a 1/2 times). 5- most importantly. anybody like it? why or why not. 6- how are the models as compared to fantasy, by that i mean, could i use minas tirith warriors as bretonnian men at arms, or moria goblins as night goblins? obviously they won't be perfect, and i'd have to do something with the bases(special movement trays i think), but other than that, can you get a 2 for 1 deal here? lots of questions, but answers would be really nice since i can't seem to find much information about it. it was the first wargame i ever played(like 7 years ago, didn't understand it, and threw it away), so their is a nastalgia factor here. thanks

LotR is unfortunately a horrible game with simplistic but badly thought out rules in my opinion. My biggest gripes about the system is how it does turns and multiple combats. Turns are are done back and forth a Phase at a time with a roll off deciding who goes first for that turn. Why the didnt just go with a side at a time turn system I never know but they didnt. Now multiple combats are a headache because they force you to split up combats into smaller fights. This may not seem so bad but when you have say a goblin army that relies on ganging up on opponents having someone charge you and making the fight split into 1v1 fights really hurts. This is a shame though as the models are great, at least the metal ones, and paint up very well. Mind you all my opinions though are based on the 2 games I played with a friends army to test it out and needless to say I was less than impressed. You may want to find someone, it may be hard, who plays and play a game before deciding though. |

lots of good info thanks! simple rules, good, in my experience simple doesn't mean boring, or that complex strategy isn't possible. and a game that's easy to pick up is one of the things i like about the game. don't know how i feel about randomized turns, that could ruin the game for me. good to hear the minis are nice. i'll have to look into that breaking up fight things, that also sounds wierd. good to hear it's pretty different, dissappointing to hear so many things it screwed up. i did play a few games, and it seeme promising, but that was like 7 years ago and i have no idea how the game plays now, or how my experience translates after so much time. |

To me it looks good but really...it takes away from what GW should focus on as their bread and butter...fantasy and 40k... Just my 2 cents. Funny thing though....when people started voicing their opinion about the game GW shut down their player input sites...they didn't like our voice. |

Also a note on the models, they are true scale 28mm not fantasy scale 28mm so they tend to be a bit smaller than warhammer minis. |

Thats very true. There is a significant size difference between alot of the models, especially foot troops. I guess it would be possible to use them in Warhammer if based appropriately, but you would probably notice the difference in size. HOWEVER, I have based up a unit of Easterlings (the old metal ones) to use in Warhammer because I love the models so much! I also compared them to Warhammer men such as Empire and Dark Elf soldiers and the difference wasnt as noticable as with the plastic LotR miniatures... As for the game, I wasnt fond of it, and I doubt I will really ever get into it. I liked the idea of non-set turn sequence that could be modified by heroes, but the way the whole game worked ensured that I never collected any armies for it. Id rather stick with Warhammer and 40k - Sammy |

Yes, there is a forum: thelastalliance.com I think. Hm, hard to say. Depends on the armies you want, but I'd say used around 125 should get you two armies and the rules. You will need the larger book I think to get the rules for the armies, the small one is only rules IIRC. It is very easy, but the system is very different. There are NO armour saves, no to hit rolls (works like Risk in a way, you roll dice for each attack you have and the highest roll wins. In a tie, the highest figh value wins). I like the combined phases and that charges don't always mean "I win". But there is a lot more shoving and a little less death with this game. It got a bad rap because of this I think and a great game was immediatly shunned by the masses. The models are fantastic and look a little more real than fantasy figs do. I love the game! It's a nice change of pace to the death dealing broken monstrosities that plague fantasy table tops around here. |

I know you aren't interested in War of the Ring - but I must post my 2 cents saying that it is a fantastic game. I'm not fond of LoTR Strategy Battles but I love WoTR. My issues with LoTRSB are: -Breaking combats down to 1 on 1 slows down game play a great deal and nullifies alot of nifty tricks like Pikes and spears -Heroes are far too important. I understand people like their heroes but good guys have far superior heroes (Aragorn the Prince for example with his infinite might). -Scenarios often end up being odd and oddly balanced. -The plethora of books one needs to play is frustrating. There aren't army books perse, there are scenario books that contain rules for forces in those scenarios so if you want to use dwarfs with a contingent on Rohan you'll need the book Dwarfs are found in as well as the latest book that Rohan is in. |

thanks again for the more info. @snickers, thanks for the forum, definitely going to look into it. interesting to hear that someone from fantasy likes LotR. that amount of money doesn't sound too bad, so i think the green stuff won't be much of an issue in my decision. @sammy and kariko, thanks for the note on models. i'm mainly going to be using moria goblins as night goblins, and minas tirith warriors as bretonnian men at arms, so i think i won't be that far off. @warpstone, my primary point of interest is the skirmish version, but i still definitely want to hear about war of the ring. i don't care much now because i'm not going to have the time and money to put together 2 full armies, but i definitely want to know if i can expand my forces into a second game. also if about how many minis is an army? goblin or minas tirith i like how there are lots of different things that people say are wierd. that's one reason i want in the game because i don't like the idea of a future battle most(really like epic sword fights and massive medieval battles over futuristic stuff), and something to give fantasy some contrast would be nice. but i'm getting kind of worried because most people are saying no. if someone has some photos of the minis next to each other that would be greatly appreciated.(specifically fantasy goblins versus LotR goblins, and plastic LotR versus fantasy men.) but anything would be great. one more thing. i player first edition LotR(the fellowship of the ring version), does anyone have any experience playing the different editions, and would getting one of those books be a good idea. i know at least money wise they're cheaper, and they have complete rules, and the stats for the units i would be using, so that's a plus. but did this get better? worse? different? not really changed much? i think i'm going to go over to the LotR forum for any more topics(thanks again), but i do think a continued discussion here would be fruitful. especially since i know a lot of people than here have been playing fantasy since long before LotR, so i value their opinions, and the comparison is nice. not that i'm brown nosing or anything

I watched a game once, it was awesome! The humans were kicking the snot out of the goblins at the beginning (archers) but then the horde descended upon them... At first in close combat they were ok, as it was only like, one human vs 3 goblins per fight, but then the rest of the goblin army caught up and the minimum per human you saw was like 4-5. Needless to say the humans were slaughtered by sheer weight of numbers! Although, really funny was watching as a single warrior (not a hero) of the humans fight of 6 goblins by himself for 4 turns, never dieing and even killing 2 of them.... |

never played lotr game but i have played legends of the old west which i am told uses a similar system. The back and forth aspect i really enjoy, makes a skirmish game nice and quick. The problem i have heard from friends who have tried the lotr game is that apparantly it take awhile to actually kill someone and they more often just end up being knocked out of b2b contact which ends up making it boring(dunno how true this is having never played), legends of the old west is similar in combat and the mechanic is lame but the shooting in that game makes up for it. If you find lotr isn't for you there is still many other skirmish games that are quiet good. Mordheim if you haven't played, i love pulp city (only needs 5ish models a side for a decent game, can play large battles with just 2 starter armie sets), legends of the old west and alkemy's getting abit of play around me too now. |
