I did up some diagrams in excel showing the space covered by a warp lightning cannon. These calculations are to show how far back you should guess. First, I decided to look at the distance covered by S4 or higher shots and calculated which inches further than your guess are most likely. For the blast, it adds an extra 0.75" at the end of each template, so I'll count that as stretching into the next band. 1" 0 2" 0 3" 4 4" 4 5" 8 6" 8 7" 12 8" 12 9" 15 10" 15 11" 17 12" 17 13" 14 14" 14 15" 10 16" 10 17" 6 18" 6 19" 3 20" 3 21" 1 22" 1 So for aiming at a point and trying to get at least S4, aiming roughly 11-12" before it is best, with both getting 17/20 non-misfires shots of sufficient strength touching it. For big monsters though, S4 often isn't what you're going for, so let's look at S6 or higher. 1" 0 2" 0 3" 3 4" 3 5" 6 6" 6 7" 9 8" 9 9" 12 10" 12 11" 14 12" 14 13" 12 14" 12 15" 9 16" 9 17" 6 18" 6 19" 4 20" 4 21" 1 22" 1 So for S6 and higher, 14/15 successful shots will hit 11" or 12" out. For aiming at a unit and trying to get a successful blast or hit ranks it's not quite so simple, but there's your information. While empire and dwarf cannons need to guess 6" back, to hit a point, we should guess 11-12" back. S4+ Data - Last row is 'extra' hits at a distance from the template. - 0's are an inch untouched by the bounce/template. - 1's are an inch touched by the bounce/template.
S6+ Data: - Last row is 'extra' hits at a distance from the template. - 0's are an inch untouched by the bounce/template. - 1's are an inch touched by the bounce/template.

im just trying to get my head around your figures (nice work as usual).... are your figure to get the template to land on the target or just to get the bounce to pass through the target?? against large targets you dont need the template to hit them.... |

Daniel cannot possibly exist in a dimensional state. Recent studies show that people who have attempted to comprehend Daniel have either disappeared, died spontaneously, or driven themselves into a pertinent state of insanity and/or catatonia. <img src="http://www.heresy-online.net/daemons/adoptables/23041.gif" alt="Broken Adoptable Image" /><br><a href="http://www.heresy-online.net/daemons/levelup/23041-dark-whisper.htm" title="Level up this Daemon!">Level up Adoptable!</a> | |

Just to get the bounce or template to hit a point. So for example, let's consider 2,4: What the data means is (with X= point where my guess is) X, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1 Line doesn't touch the two 0's, then 4" are covered by the line. At the end of the line, the template is place adding an additional 0.75" to the distance covered. ------------------------ Some additional observations: -The most common distances for the template to be placed at S4+ are 12" out and 14" out 4/20 each). -The most common distances for the template to be placed at S6+ are 12" out, 14" out, 16" out and 18" out with 3/15 each). Conclusion: For S4+, you can predict the template decently if you need it 12"-14" back. Needing S6+, don't bother. |

for monsters you just want to touch them with the bounce over shoot at 2" (which is the minimum)+ 6" bounce (the minimum Str you are going to want to hurt them)+ 1.5" template is a total of 9.5" so even if the over shoot was 10" there is only a 0.5" gap for the model to avoid being hit by the bounce / template so with this in mind as long as you guess 9" before the target as long as you dont roll the misfire you should hit the model at some point on the bounce so the only thing you need to worry about is rolling a strength high enough to hurt it..... (im really tired at the time of writing this so hopefully it makes sense... i will have to look at it again after some sleep) |

Care to enlighten us? bakfire the experimenter did a fairly good job of breaking it down. @Decker_cky Thanks for putting this together. Now I just need time to practice and implement. |

I actually might have a mistake in my calculations. In my mental analysis, I halved the 1.5" rather than 3" for additional ranges. I am going to edit my numbers again (only slight changes needed). And bakfire's method is correct for hitting a monster. Mine was a more abstract chance to hit a give point. |
