Plague Priest/Deacon conversion

So I did a little conversion project last night to give my monk unit a little boost. I just don't like GW's official model for a plague priest at all, and I hate having to use Skrolk every time I want a PP or deacon on the table.

The censer uses the musician's arm and I cut the ball off of his drum stick and attached the censor from the sprue to that to make the handle long enough so that it looks more impressive now, like it could be used with 2 hands. I used a bit of flame on the chain to reposition the ball and chain slightly. If you are familiar with the censor on the plague monk sprue you'll notice this. There are also a few extra boils on his right hand now.

He stands a half head taller than the regular monks, so he needed a new hood to get his head on where I wanted it to go. The putty used for the hood was magic sculpt, so it looks white compared to the grey plastic. I used greenstuff on the sleeves and horns, just to compare the two putties against each other.

Just a bit of smoothing to do I think before I paint this guy up. Sorry about the lighting, but hopefully you can make this out well enough.

What do you think? Feedback?

I like it, especially the idea with the ridge of horns on his head.

But after seeing those absolutely fantastic giant rat sculpts linked in your signature I'm sure you could make him look even more menacing and rotten with a few more details.

One thing I would change is the censer arm. I think it looks too unnatural how effortlessly he swings the censer. Maybe it would help if you changed the chain so it just dangles like the censer on Skrolks staff.

If you're picking up one of the new screaming bell/ furnace kits, there's a pretty decent PP to be had if you decide to build a bell, you might even be able to mount the priest on a regular base even if he rides the furnace.

I was thinking that... for my own force the screaming bell basicall offers two characters... its a very good kit.

The figure looks great perhaps the Empire Fanatic sprue would be usevul for conversions.

Well, I did pick up the furnace kit, and plan to use it as a furnace since I really like my Bell from 4th-5th edition. I know it's a bit smallish compared to the new stuff, but I like my paint job and such, and anyway I haven't taken a bell in years. The furnace is something I will actually use once in a while. So the PP from the furnace kit is spoken for.

I like the idea of doing the censor bearing arm differently to convey more weight and power in this figure. Maybe I will get back to him over the Thanksgiving break and do a new arm for him. The problem with repositioning the chain is that it's plastic and you can't really bend it all that much without it breaking or melting and losing all of it's detail. Sculpting a chain from scratch is a possibility...

O.k., taking the comments that I got to heart I went back and did more work on my Plague Priest conversion, and I am pretty happy with the results. I hope you like them too!

To begin with, I gave this guy much broader shoulders and made him taller, with newly sculpted feet. This hopefully makes his one handed carrying of the flail look more convincing. Also added bigger fangs and a 'turned page' to the spell book, for a touch of extra character.

Compare the size of this guy against a "normal" plague monk - he stands about a full head taller, not counting his horny protrusions (and also ranks up way better than the old Lord Skrolk figure):

And yes, that's a rat bodyguard on his shoulder:

As you can see, I took a bit of a plastic rat from the monk sprue and gave him new legs, paws and tail. I like the way the rat looks like he is reading the book that the Priest is holding :)

From the backside...he has a new back foot and a longer hood and a bunch of plastic bitz added here and there. Note the trusty dispell scroll tucked in his belt!

Hope you like it - comments welcome! Plan to paint him over the weekend :)

Imposing.

Even Skrolk would look a bit small next to him, and thats saying something! Great work too.

Looks ace! The extra effort really paid off.

The guy is full of atmosphere now and that rat on his shoulder in -ready to pounce- position looks just perfect and rounds up the model real nicely imho.
Very impressive modelling.

With the extra size and muscle he put on he also looks absolutely capable of swinging that censer single handedly now. :)

Looking forward to see him painted !

Thanks for the comments! I had to put him aside for a bit because I need a warpgrinder, doomflayer and plague catapult for my next battle and that's a lot of stuff to get to in a short period of time! I'll be painted the Deacon as time permits...

O.k., this took longer to get back to than I imagined (something to do with a Doomflayer I think...), but I finally needed this guy for a game so I painted him up last Saturday. I'm not sure I am happy with the result, but it was good enough at the time. I may do more work on him...not sure...

Anyway, here's what this project looks like with a little paint applied:

So far he has not been bitten by his Rat Hound Bodyguard :censor:

Comments? I think it needs some green somewhere...

Nice work on the book and the rat looks particularly good up on the shoulder.

If you wamted to slip some green into the model, how about painting the spikes from the head in a warpstone colour scheme?

Not a bad idea perhaps. I think I will start by adding some green runes to the book and see how that works. Possibly making every other triangle on the boarder of the robes green? I think I also need more highlighting in general.

I really like that conversion, definately looks more imposing compared to a normal monk.

I probably should have put him on a slate base and made him stand even taller. The base looks rather plain to me compared to the stuff people are doing these days.
