Slaves question; Should they all be rats?

Just wondering, as I tinker with army lists...

Would it be acceptable to use other races as slaves or to mix in to the slave unit?

I don't desire to buy a ton of the new clanrats, having plenty of the ones they just replaced for my clanrats, but I want to make it easy for opponents to know which are slaves and which are clanrats... beyond grubbier paint scheme.

If I used Empire militia or state troops (weapons clipped off), Goblins, and/or Hobgoblins as slaves... would this be considered OK? Would this be objectionable in a tournament in your eyes?

Option A: All slaves should Skaven
Option B: As long as I can tell the difference between slave and clanrats
Option C: As long as some rats are mixed in.
Twisted, evil, treacherous, and diabolical rats wielding arcane technologies that are dangerous to foe and friend, that care not for their kin and are constantly plotting against each other. What more need I say about what makes Skaven cool?

Have spare little rats from the old clanrats, current plague monks, corpse cart, or individual rats from the doom wheel? PM me. I want them. 30 more needed.

Using some non-skaven models for slaves is perfectly acceptable, and also fits with the fluff. As long as your opponent can identify the unit, it should not be a problem.

I full well intend to use Night Goblins for my slave units. My army's fluff involves them recently subjugating a tribe. From a practical PoV assembling and painting skull pass goblins is far easier than attempting to differentiate clan rats from slaves.

I think that as long as you CLEARLY identify said units before the game and answer any questions your opponent may have it shouldn't be an issue.

Ive heard of people using Empire flagellants and there is mention of goblin slaves in Tretch Craventails fluff so Im sure anything fine if its feasible the skaven could capture it

Sure, you can use other races as slaves, although I still have to see a non-skaven slave unit I really like. Fluff-wise it is no problem though.

I have actually just started assembling and painting the new clanrats box, and the unarmored ones make great slaves. Especially since there are so many knives and makeshift weapons in there. A ragged bunch of those guys armed with an assortment of shivs, clubs and the occassional meatcleaver looks awesome.

when I started my slaves I purchased a box of goblins, a box of zombies, and a box of dwarves. I then mixed them all together! Toss in some random skaven slaves, clanrats, ghouls, and gnobblars, and you have several unique looking units of slaves. in total I think I have over 80 slaves. The tough part came when I had to paint them. I succeeded by using a very basic color scheme and using the same colors for all the models. I painted the skin and fur using a washed flesh with rotten flesh dry-brushed. The cloth and armor was a washed leather drybrushed. I used scorpion green for the eyes. The fluff behind them looking that way is my clan uses it's slaves to mine warpstone and the effects of the warpstone bleaches their skin and makes their eyes glow green. They look cool on the table and are in character and unique! Go for it! :D

mine are all gnobblars and skinks. All 80 of them. That was a fun time painting and magnetising.

Shennanigans are out of the question!
Mine are 3 rows of Flagellants, Empire Militia with broken weapons, and Gnoblars, witha rank of rats with torches and scourges (from the flaggie box).

Makes it look like the rats are running slaves forward by whip.

As far as Tourneys, the two I've played in have had no problem, because it is VERY apparent which unit is which.

the last word I had from tourney organizers is that you just have to use the same size base for your slaves, and inform your oppenant what the unit is.
I had a cool picture but I lost it.

Crookback Mountain
Crookback Mountain is the largest Skaven stronghold in the Dark Lands. The mountain lies at the eastern end of Mad Dog Pass, a great spire of black rock thrusting up out of the dusty plain. Crookback Mountain is currently held by Lord of Decay Kratch Doomclaw, leader of one of the most powerful clans, Clan Rictus. Clan Rictus breed a remarkably large number of giant black-furred warriors so Lord Kratch has numerous regiments of elite Stormvermin under his control, making him much feared by the other Warlord clans. The main function of this particular hold are to supply Goblin slaves to the Under-Empire and to mine the rich seams of iron and copper beneath the mountain for the forges of Clan Rictus.
These goblins are Night Goblins BTW.

After painting upwards of 120 clanrats, I decided to make half of my slaves Empire militia. They work well; just chew up their weapons a bit and give 'em a heavy wash of ink.

I only have 40 or 50 slaves, of that less than 10 are skaven.

It's generally considered acceptable to have your slaves as non-skaven.

Stormvermin
I use 100 Night Goblins as my slaves in blocks of 20 with a master moulder with a whip running after them to act as a musician. 21 in total, 105 slaves...it's glorious. But on the morrow I begin the assembly line and I am sure no one here envies the task.

But I think skinks would be a great option, especially in a pestilens heavy list.

Fluff/background wise slaves should all be Skaven. Whilst the rat-men do indeed enslave other races, they would not be used to fight their wars. As soon as they were given the opportunity they would flee the battlefield, not fight for their opressors. And can you imagine what a unit of human slaves would do when sent into battle against an Empire army?
Skaven slaves on the otherhand have no where to run to, and would be the only slaves you could trust to obey your commands and not try and escape at the first opportunity.

Game-wise slave units can be made up of all sorts of models and no one would mind, so long as they looked the part.
