you're forgetting about the armor save, command (banner and musician), and the addition of weapon teams that make clanrats just as potent if not more so than giant rats as the main core of your army

that may be the case, but for every 2 clanrats with shields you could get 3 giant rats, as a sheer mass they arent too bad!

thats fine and dandy till you charge that unit of HE spearmen and he kills all the rats you planed on attacking with cause you had no save. There is something to be said about the holding power of units, especially your core units. I would never trade clanrats for giant rats unless I had a few clanrat units and needed a flanker or 2

They're faster for sure and they can spam out the attacks, but they are fragile, and command-less. In the old list I've lost a large number of fleeing giant rat units that I would have kept had there been a musician handy. I love 'em, wouldn't make a list without em, but the center of my army is always going to have clanrats, the giant rats will fold where the clannies can hold. |

Also...with packmasters, giant rats are MUCH more fragile to shooting since the unit can be considered dead once the packmasters are gone.

the role of a giant rat is to flank. they also hunt fast cav and skirmishers well, but they lack the armour and CR to go up against block troops head on.

Yea the GR are a great value for sure but they could not replace Clanrats. I mainly use mine to flank, table quarter, and go after war machines and ranged units.

when you play a game it becomes very evident which is better and thats the clanrats. Because they have acccess to command they can have a more static combat resolution. If i had to pick between a the +1 inch move and having "spears" or a 4+ save i would go for the armour save. Giant rats though are a heck of a lot better at flanking. Actaully i might try casting death frenzy on a unit of giant rats as you'd get 30 attacks overall  . |

Yep, giant rats are excellent flanking units and ideal candidates for Death frenzy, but they cannot replace clanrats. I'm currently experimenting with a unit of 27 rats and 3 PMs 6 wide and 5 deep for the bargain price of 105 points. 15 str 3 attacks cant be bad, 39 if Death Frenzied Ratarsed |

Giant rats should always be included. They don't replace clanrats. They have a different job. If you have the points it is the plague monks or storm vermin who replace the clan rats in your anvil unit.

If giant rats could have weapon teams, my clannies would be out of a job so fast

I am inclined to agree the Giant rats usually out perform the clanrats in my games. |
