with the recent tweaks that have taken place in the new book what is the best way to run skaven? It used to obviously be lots of clanrats + slaves. Now i hear its slaves as cores and then just take plague monks pretty much. If the plague monks the best way i might have to buy a few boxes. Btw i'm talking about optimizing your list ie what is the BEST way to configure you army. What does everyone else think? |

The best way to configure an army is to go play demons. If you want to play skaven on the other hand, then since the book isn't out yet, all the lists you'll see floating around are mere speculation (though some people have been playing using the new rules). Your best bet is to read the countless threads on this forum discussing the pros and cons of each unit/combos. Currently the win-buttons seem to be the Abom, furnace and bell. PCBs seem to be a very popular special choice due to the cheaper points cost and extra attack each. Don't go overboard on plague monks as they are frenzied and are prone to go walk abouts chasing birdies into the local forests. Really, there are many good builds you can make with the new book, but finding the one that fits your play style is key. I know a few players who have never made a list in their life, they just go on teh internetz and use other peoples who have been made for "optimum performance! BOOYAH!". This doesn't mean they can play that list (or the game at all in most cases). |

everything nevamore said, and then add this in. we're a horde army, chances are if you got into 6th edition you liked the idea of a horde army. also, another thing skaven are known for are being risk takers. lots of our weapons kill us too(and rather dramatically i might add), but at the same time when they work they are wicked sick. our tunnelers are very nice, but they don't always show up when and where you want to, and occasionally not at all. these two aspects have been more or less preserved in the new book. we got some reliable stuff, and some expensive stuff with the new book, but by and large we're still the wacky generals who have a bizarre set of tactics that involve killing our own units, and pulling a number of rather underhanded tricks. but like nevamore said, there's lots of stuff you can do. i just suggest the wacky often unpredictable horde army because it goes along with the fluff(or at least it did for sixth edition, still haven't got my new book). Mutation: i think that daemons line is going to be my signature. |

To continue the theme and provide a slightly different slant... The best way to configure an army is based on how you think. If you are an artillery specialist (meaning you like to sit back and shoot stuff) you probably don't want to build an Eshin/Pestilens list. Skaven can't do everything. They lack options of the heavily armored infantry variety... Stormvermin try, but they don't hold a candle to Warriors of Chaos, nor should they. They don't have a flying monster like a Dragon or Wyvern but they have the Abomination and they have the Doomwheel as a Dragon counter... More fundamentally, you have to decide when building whether you want to excel in one are so much that you don't care what your opponent does (which may still be possible with a SAD build) or if you are going to try and counter the dangerous things that your opponent can bring (e.g. bringing the Storm Banner and Engineers looking for Warpgale to stop Dragons). I personally lean toward flexible counters... I'm expecting (at least at this point) to run an Eshin/Skryre list with Jezzails and Gutter Runners for specials. Maybe not the most powerful units in the list but they'll coordinate nicely for me and suit my playstyle. |
