To all NAF members

We have delayed doing some work until the election was over but now we need to press on. During Saturday 17th the web site at bloodbowl.net will be going down and you will see a domain message. There is a process, a legal one, we need to go through. It will depend where in the world you are, Europe is expected to exit about 8am, in line with midnight for Central North America, maybe the early hours East coast.

The process we need to do will take between 2 and 5 days to complete so the website as you know it will not be available. This is somewhat out of our hands. We have alerted the tournaments running this weekend so they can organise and set expectation for results entry.

We are aware that 5 days can seem a long time so we have another domain that will also come live some point over the weekend, probably Saturday evening. (Once again this depends on where you are globally).

The address http://thenaf.net will host the web site for a few days while this goes on but it will be a static site. I have asked for renewals and sign ups to be disabled as there is no link to Paypal. Dont post there....it will not be there when the site comes back up next week. It is there so you can find information, read forums, find NAF numbers etc.

Sorry for any inconvenience but this is a process we must go through to move ahead and get us where we want to be long term. It could be back up Monday morning but I am very deliberately setting a longer expectation as much of what is involved is done by third parties, not us.

Dave

I assume this has to do with the protection of Games Workshop's intellectual property (since NAF has bloodbowl.net as its URL), but despite the fact nothing their management does surprises me anymore, I do hope that they won't force anything upon an organization that has been built by Jervis Johnson amongst others and is around for all the Blood Bowl players around the globe for over seven years now.

Discuss.

Well, part of it is probably just technical upgrades. Besides, i fit were about the URL, then they wouldn't be coming back online later.

Well after all the posts on the BB PC game forums made by Cyanide and/or Focus about GW intellectual properties and websites using said properties in URLs or names of websites and how doing so is a violation without GW approval I think it is about the URL.

Here is the OP from the BB PC game forums

"It is always the intention of Focus Home Interactive and Games Workshop to support the Blood Bowl Community by allowing leagues to create their own fansites etc.

At the same time, we have a duty to ensure that Games Workshop’s Intellectual Property rights in the Blood Bowl Game are protected. In order to help our fans, and so that they do not fall foul of these rights, we suggest that you take some time to review Games Workshop’s IP Policy on the following link http://legal.games-workshop.com/.

The policy is addressed primarily to those who want to exchange news, information, ‘house’ rules, and so on via the internet. The basic principles in the policy apply equally well to fanzines and other hobby activities. It gives guidance to fans as to what they can and cannot do with Games Workshop’s Intellectual Property, to avoid them running the risk of having to alter their use of Games Workshop’s Intellectual Property.

Within the policy there are some simple rules, such as:

1) Do not mention any Games Workshop Trademarks, such as “Blood Bowl” or “Warhammer” in your URL or league name; and
2) Do not screenscrape any content from official websites.

There are also a number of more general guidelines, setting out the spirit of the policy. If a fan follows the policy in spirit and letter, then it is highly unlikely that Games Workshop will take any action to prevent their use of Games Workshop’s IP.

Focus Home Interactive would really like to support massively all your competitions by relaying them on the official forum or on the official Blood Bowl website. Although, just like all the official announcements made by Focus Home Interactive, inclusion must be approved by Games Workshop, you must understand that any league or fansite that does not comply with Games Workshop's rules cannot expect to be supported."

*laughs*...

Fat chance Games Workshop will succeed in getting every single league in the world to not use Blood Bowl as part of its name.
