Wow. So many vaired reasons for army buying here. A lot of people are probably going to hate me for this, but im one of those n00bish people that everyone hates who builds their army to an army list. Im a competitive tournament player first and foremost, so to me the most important aspect of collecting the army is going to be what it can do for me on the battlefield. In saying that, I dont go out to build completely cheesy lists with 40 jezzails and 4 warlocks (because they're no fun and dont require you to think), but I do build the army up with the intention of it being 'ard. |
| You kids these days have it so easy, what with your Plague Furnaces and your Hellpit Abominations and your Bonebreaker Warlords. Back in MY day, all we had was Slaves and Clanrats!...and auto-hit Ratling Guns...and skirmishing Jezzails...and 2D6 Warp Lightning...and Lead From The Back...wait, what was my arguement again? | |

I think, when I start a new army, I buy one of the core units and one of the metal warlords or hero's. From there it's more or less what I feel I need more of, along with models I like the look of. Motivation is a major problem for me to overcome, so if I buy a model that I can say I'll have fun painting it'll go that much more smoothly. I also try to make the most with what I've already have, so all my slaves are made up from the Battle for Skull Pass gobbo's and dwarves I bought earlier. |

fluff, fluff and more fluff...and thats it. fluff is everything for me and i enjoy it since i only play with friends. i tweak rules to fit the fluff (like my grey seer have a plague monk bodyguard, but in the fluff they are not plague monks of course), create my own special characters to lead the army, convert things here and there... my IG army is so fluff heavy that the army list sucks to the point i probebly cant win with it ;P but i love the army anyway becouse of everything i have written to it... so fluff, fluff and more fluff... |

Well, I mainly go for the look factor. Do the models look cool and can I come up with a good paint scheme to set the models off just right. But the fluff also has to be there. If it isn't, then all the coolness of the models wears off for me. Guess that is why I have come back to Skaven. Have 1k points of Lizards and Woodies, but seems Skaven have everything I am looking for, both cool models and great fluff. |

Fluff and also mostly custom units. For example, If I can use custom units I use my Warp-runners (Gutter Runners with warplock duals). If I cannot use it, they represent cool gutter runners. |

I usually create an army off characters in Roleplays. For example, The Vampire Council, Carpe Noctem's roleplay that spans 41, 200 post threads and about 20 supplements inspired my Undead Darkelves. (The roleplay is still going strong, about a third done.) I then base the army off a unit which has rules I particulalrly like, like Black Knights. The models can be converted. Having chosen Black Knights as a centre the army tries to be quite mobile, which is a new playstyle to VC, and therefore fun. |

I pour over the army book, consumed for quite sometime, scribbling down this or that compostion, before I commit to any certain 'look & feel'... in the meantime I may have already purchased a few of the 'must haves' to begin the collection. There have also been purchases made that...in the end were found to be merely esthetically pleasing and not much use for my army ie., an assassin ( all painted up & never been used ) & the which I find to be ridiculously risky and not worth it's point cost, especially with the availability of ratling guns now.

i generally create an army based around my long standing rpg campaign, when i get a "cool idea" i throw it into the rpg, then i buy a coupla models who suit the theme or dig them up from me old faithful bitz box and paint away, am now starting me third this way (Dark elves) which were my first army back in 1991-2. |
| when cooking halflings, i advise beginning on a low temperature for a long time, this way you seal in the juices!!! | |

I am an obsessive list builder so i guess i start with the list first. By obsessive i mean currently i have lists, 5 or so each, on my computer for orcs, dwarfs, tomb kings, empire, dark elves, WoC, DoC and high elves and that is just the ones for fantasy. Mind you i only own 2 armies, skaven and WoC. Anyways i then eliminate the ones i dislike the fluff for, its why i dont have a elf army despite loving there rules. Then i move on to the cost of building the army the way i want and then tweak the list till i like it and can buy it a peice at a time and still play. You wouldnt believe how much im chomping at the bit to make lists for the new book. |

Shennanigans are out of the question!

You know, it seems to really depend upon the army. With Skaven, I started buying clanrats because I fell in love with the army, and built up as I could to get a playable army that I like. With my WoC army, I started getting ideas for Nurgle conversions, and researched the book, and started collecting a somewhat competitive army. For the Lizardmen I just started it was a paint scheme that got me the battalion box, and we will see where it goes from there. |
|
"Nurgle has got to be my favorite chaos god, fluff wise... He's portrayed as this sort of jovial, jolly old guy who thinks that rotting apocolyptic plague is funny as hell... So basically he's a big ole fat bastard who thinks giving you a scorching case of the herp is a big laugh." ---Kadrium 7th Edition Fellblade Kills: 1 Steam Tank, 1 Warrior Priest, 4 Greatswords, 3 Treekin, 1 Chaos Sorcerer, 5 Chaos Warriors, 13th Spell Kills: 8 Chaos Chosen. | |

I usually get the minimum units to make a legal force, then get what I like the look of, and try them out. I dont always go with what other people say are good choices as everyone plays a differeny way, so its almost personal choice. |

Skaven is a special case for me because I really like the race and fluff as a whole. So I've been slowly collecting the minis regardless of the rules. Having said that, my second army (Empire like you) will be more in line of fluff than what looks cool when I make my army list. |
