For those that haven't read the information behind this, it's going to be a CGI movie of app. 70 minutes in length. I guess you can see this as something akin to the movie that came with the Deadspace game, though (I assume) a bit like 3D style, instead of 2D cartoon.

So that's it? Some words and an Ultrasmurf...errr...Ultramarine logo? I need to see more soon before I start randomly barking "LAME!" and freaking out my family and co-workers...

The New Lunar Republic!
I can't say this is unexpected, as it was only a matter of time before someone tried a movie of Warhammer 40K. However, I am skeptical, as I have found that movies based on a game often do not come out too well, but I will be watching, just in case this is an exception.

Though a movie starring eldar would have been SO much better :P

They were giving out leaflets for this at Gamesday!

I gues it would go one of two ways;

1 - Boda's aforementioned *facepalm*

Or

2 - Surprisingly fun!

From the trailers and CGI stuff in GW games, it has potential. I guess its a different studio doing it though.......

Who wouldn't want to see CGI nids, munching there way through the Ultramarines 1st company at the battle for Macragge though? ^_^

aww it's gonna be CGI?

i was hoping for some blue/green screen stuff (i forget which colour it is) like lotr, only in reverse. so instead of making the characters look smaller than everything else they made the actors look 9 foot tall.

i was looking forward to 300 but with guys in power armour instead of loin cloths, that would've been amazing. if they actually just took the script for 300 and swapped all the spartan and persian references and stuff for 40k stuff i'd be pretty happy indeed :P it probably wouldn't make much sense, but it would've been cool :P

i mean, imagine lines like: "madness? THIS IS ULTRA!" :P

whatever happens i imagine 40k players will be annoyed by something.

Well when we were given the leaflet they refused to confirm whether it was a movie or about Ultramarines.. Damn GW secrecy is going a bit far.. when they can't confirm either of them.

i'm glad for that. battle sequences stink in live action. all the blows they deal out and stuff are way too slow. in lotr, none of the fights looked realistic, all the blows were too soft.

Yeah, i heard about this a few days ago on Westgamer. Just like here, everyone over there seems divided on it. Its either going to be freakingly awesome like the CGI opening sequence in Dawn of War (though hopefully with a little more plot), or else is going to be little more than action pr0n, relegated to the far ranks of such movies as the 3rd installment of starship troopers (seriously, they should have just stopped after the first. Starship troopers 1 = win. Starship troopers everything else = fail.
You kids these days have it so easy, what with your Plague Furnaces and your Hellpit Abominations and your Bonebreaker Warlords. Back in MY day, all we had was Slaves and Clanrats!...and auto-hit Ratling Guns...and skirmishing Jezzails...and 2D6 Warp Lightning...and Lead From The Back...wait, what was my arguement again?

I like CGI action too, but I gotta say, how does live action not look as realistic as CGI?? I mean, hit someone with a big sword in real life and you'd find that realistically things that heavy don't move like they were feathers and people who get hit don't actually fly back 10 feet...

using heavy weapons is one thing, in many LA movies they swing light swords around like great weapons.

All cut up...
But it is strange because I usually associate CGI with comedy films (Toy Story, Ice Age, you get my point). Especially when you think that just about every description of them involves some point them completely covered in blood. Which you just don't expect from a CGI movie

Introducing Ultramarines – A Warhammer 40,000 Movie!
27 September 2009

For the first time, Games Workshop’s globally renowned Warhammer 40,000 universe is to be realised in a feature-length movie on DVD.

Ultramarines
is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques. Games Workshop is delighted to be working with UK-based production company Codex Pictures, who have the momentous task of bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to the screen.

Commenting on the news, Erik Mogensen, Licensing and Acquired Rights Manager for Games Workshop, said, “Over the years, we have been approached again and again by all sorts of producers and film companies wanting to take our intellectual property to the screen. We have always believed that, in the right hands, the stories, themes and characters from the Warhammer 40,000 universe would lend themselves perfectly to the movie genre. We’re working closely with the talented team at Codex Pictures, who have an excellent understanding of the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property and an inspired vision for the movie. We can’t wait to see our universe come to life on-screen.”

“We’re hugely honoured to be making Ultramarines,” said a spokesman for Codex Pictures. “It’s taken a lot of research and development to get to this stage – and it’s such an exciting challenge to be able to bring the depth and power of the Warhammer 40,000 universe to a brand new medium.”

News of the production of a movie was unveiled at UK Games Day, the biggest event in the Games Workshop calendar, on Sunday, September 27 2009.

Still, it's not like Games Workshop hasn't made a movie based on their games before, cause who has forgotten the epic movie Inquisitor (part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4)... :P I had rather hoped Games Workshop would have picked up something like the old Blood Quest movie (project?) they had with Exile Films, cause that would be something that appeals to more people then Ultramarines, as Leonitas is one of the more known figures of the Marines due to his appearance in the Warhammer Monthly comic novels.

... and despite the fact that it's a bit off-topic, you can't blame an anti-'current day Games Workshop management sense of marketing' for remembering the old days when things were bad in a good way.

Its not like they'd make a movie off any other race, I think the Space Marines make more money than the Fantasy range altogther, Ultramarines more so, they are trying to get the maximum profit from a single movie.

Despite this, I'd give it a chance, you can always root for the 'nids.
Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys, treat them as your beloved sons, and they will follow you unto death.
