Considering a side army

My rats are near to a playable state that I'm content to take a break from for a while.I've been considering working on a smaller force from another army to just have something other than rat tails and buck teeth to work on for a while.
Problem is my experience is limited with other armies and I'm not sure what I want to get into.Was wondering if you guys would mind just giving me a general rundown of how a few different armies play out on the field and what their strengths and weakness might be and what kind of cool special rules they might have that make them unique?

WoC caught my eye being that they seem to be the exact contrast to a horde army.I dig the heavy armour look and wouldn't mind painting some of the models they have.The Nurgle fluff sounds pretty interesting to me but form what little info I've gathered people prefer to play the other gods in themed armies as opposed to Nurgle.Is Nurgle not preferable or am I just not reading the right web snippets?And what would a Nurgle army bring to the game?

Beastmen intrigues me but mostly because I know nothing about them.I think I've heard something about an "ambush" rule?I would assume they have multiple build options like most other armies but whats the meat and potatoes of their nature in a fight?Are they a horde army?Do they have cool offensive magic?

High Elves was the other army I considered.Am I right in saying that they can field a dragon at relatively low point point battles (like 1500) and they are pretty much required by federal law to bring a ton of magic to a fight?

Empire was the least likely of the options for me to go with but its another one that I know next to nothing about.From what I can see they have a million different build options but it was the warrior priest that caught my attention.I've heard if you take a war priest you can take flagellants as a core choice but does the priest himself do anything spiffy and can you take 2 units of flagellants at core if you take 2 war priests or is it just one unit of the flagellants at core no matter the number of priests?And does the empire end up functioning as a horde army?

for WoC, most people prefer khorne or tzeentch as they are more powerful.

Beasts could be called a horde army, i guess. they specialize in outmaneuvering opponents (they skirmish and rank up) and can enter the board from any side. i'd wait for them to enter next ed., though.

You should try lizardmen or High elves, both are small elite forces that are the polar opposites of skaven, making them have an entirely different feel to them

Nurgle isn't bad for WoC. The first spell is one of the best in the game (an enemy in LoS lose a wound without armour saves), great sniper spell. The mark was nerfed a bit however with the FAQ. And, the Mark of Slaanesh is awesome on units, so that's the mark I usually take on most of mine.
One unit that is often taken is Knights with MoN and the banner of Rage: never-ending frenzy and -1 to hit with shooting is a nasty combo.

Beastmen is a cool army, but they seem to be up for a new armybook right after skaven, so I wouldn't buy too much of them at the moment. The have a combo of semi-skirmishing herds (which was nerfed with 7th ed) and monsters like minotaurs. A lot of the bigger minis are old metals, so they really need an update. If you want to start them I'd only buy a herd box or two (AHW on the gors, no shields at all), maybe some chaos warhounds, and a beastlord/wargor with great weapon.
The beast armybook was written to work in conjunction with HoC, so now we've lost a lot of the magical items and some very useful units.

@UtE-I would happily give Lizards a go if my brother in law didnt play them.Although our schedules rarely match up to where we can play against each other I want to see something new and different .
@Everyone else-Thanks for the input.

So another thought occured to me.If I could browse the fluff of the different armies it might help me make a decision.Problem with that theory is my 2 year old and wife are both impatient about any amount of time I spend perusing the local game store.Is there a website where the fluffy bits of the army books can be found in any great extent?I realize that GW guards the playable info like points cost and stat lines with a rabid tenacity but do they clamp down on the storied parts of the books too?

On the GW website, under each army is an articles section. These will usually have info on a typical army make up and also afew articles on fluff/background/characters/events
For your second army i'd defantly just pick an army with the coolest models/background and then worry about how they play later. You already have your first army for competitive play.

i personally chose WOC for my 2nd army. it is a complete opposite of skaven and has awesome models so you can play differently.

I went into the Vampire Counts side, but that’s because I like the idea of raising up an army at the battle field, and the one-person army.
I think you could try Daemons of Chaos I think they are far better than WoC, and the immune to psychology make them far opposite than skavens with leadership 5. Also all units are incresible and you have good magic in Tzeentch (and Tzeentch basic units are also mages...).

I've seen a few clubs refusing to allow daemons to play and in general they aren't a fun army to play (you'll usually win without any need for skill and it gets boring for both sides).

WOC are a great army for playing and converting. Disc-mounted sorcerers throwing magic missiles around is fun and your troops are much more reliable than rats.

I'd actually say that daemons are better for conversion possibilities but the are SOOOOOOOOO over powered that it is almost impossible to not build an army that will beat you opponent each and every single time.
So if your going to consider daemons remember that.
