Yep, as everyone above said. That sentence has to be read in context to the whole paragraph. The idea is this: "in the same way as you would do for the bounce of a cannon ball" = The main body of the rule, i.e. it's a line, you measure it like a template, then count models that are hit under the line with one hit per row. "except that all models (friend of foe) lying along the entire lines' length are hit" = the exception from the cannonball. Where cannonballs only hit at the end of the first line then along its bounce, the WLC's shot does not have a bounce in the middle of it: the whole thing is like a bounce. The sentence means to say "like a cannonball bounce, except there is no bounce, so use the entire line's length." The reason behind the "one model per row" rule is what we call policy, it has its basis in maintaining fairness and avoiding loopholes and overcomplication (like mentioned, trying to accurately measure everything under an infinitely thin line is close to impossible, and raises even more questions like "does touching the tip of one corner of a base count" or "what if the bases are not lined up perfectly" or "how can I be sure I'm not holding my line template perfectly straight"). That's why GW simplified the rule to 1 model per row. I don't see a reason why they would remove a policy rule for one specific unit, especially when doing so is still impractical and isn't necessitated by the unit's design. Anyway, that's the explanation behind the intention of the rule. If you're still after a definite official interpretation of the rule, we also have this:

At last someone points to a FAQ for this.. it was starting to be a tiresome thread. General rule is, if something has a special rule that EXPLICITLY says it's different from the standard rules then for the sake of sanity play it with generic rules. It's like the whole thing with the casket of souls and skaven Leadership. People will always try to read the rules to their favour but this is not Magic the Gathering the rules are not meant to be examined under a high powered microscope. |

This is why it is beneficial to hit them on the flanks - so you can hit as many models as possible. Otherwise you would be trying to aim at them diagonally, which sounds a bit ridiculous. Later! 'Sticks |
