Well first of all thank you for taking your time to read this topic. Me and my friends all collect warhammer and as such every few weeks go round to each others house for a 3 way battle (empire heavy artillary and ranged based, a goblin horde army, and me). I have come from a dark elf playing backround and as such I am not very sure on skaven tatics as dark elf's tatics are very different. I recently found this fourm and I have been reading round it to see that I am going completly the wrong way with my army force (and my planned tatics). so far I have 1 warlock engineer 40 clan rats 40 plague monks (only found out its a bit much :D) 2 rat ogres 6 giant rats (one unit) I would also like it if someone could help me on which upgrades to get e.g. magic standard for plague monks. I have all the orginal parts in my draw so champions, musicions and standard bearers are not to late to change, I can very easerly add these to my army. army size ranges from 1000 all the way to 2500 points. I would really like some light on this matter because its always nice to see the look on your friends when they see a new army that out swarms even those annoying goblins. |

Unfortunately your gonna need to get alot more clan rats in order to have an effective skaven horde. As it stands the only ok army list i see would be 2X20 CR- standard, musician 2X20 PM- standrd, musician (1with BOBH, 1 Umbranner) 2X1 RO 1X7 GR with this you might squeez out 1000pts barely. Look up a rat dart tactics since thats the only use 1 pack of giant rats will be. |
| Huge Skaven Army for sale. I have built and primed over 4000pts worth of skaven, and have 2500pts of that painted and based. PM me for details if your interested. | |

My first recommendation is to get more clanrats. If you have the funds, 3 more boxes would provide enough clanrats and slaves for 1000 point battles (4 boxes if you want more of a horde army). For skaven, the general rule is that you should have one combat unit (clanrats, plague monks, sormvermin) and one slave unit for every 500 points, plus one extra set for good measure. So for 1000 points, 2 regiments of 25 clanrats, 2 regiments of 20 slaves, a plague monk unit, and some skirmishers, weapon teams, and characters makes a good list. If you want to outnumber those goblins, 3 units of 25 clanrats, 3 units of 20 slaves, and some giant rats and nightrunners for support should outnumber almost any other army by at least 2 to 1. For characters, a cheap chieftain makes the best general, with a warlock for magic, definitely get a warlord model to use as a chieftain. You should invest in a box of nightrunners, they are extremely useful on the battlefield. Giant rats are also very useful, but the moulder box is ridiculously expensive, use the rats on the plague monk sprue and the three pack masters from the moulder box to create one unit of three packs. Weapon teams are also a good idea. Two ratling guns would provide enough weapon teams for battles of up to 1500-2000 points. Hope this was helpful, feel free to post your list in the army list section for review. |

thanks for the comments I will be going to games workshop tomorrow and I was wondering what would you make a priority for me to buy I will proberly be spending up to a budget of £40. I will 100% buy at least one box of clan rats as I see I would get destroyed if I had 20. this would leave me with (I think) an extra to models to use as slaves along with £22. I also did forget to mention that I have a warpfire thrower teams. Should I drop the warfire throwe and get a ratterling gun instread? Finally would it be worth my time buying a tunneling team to stop helblaster and motar as its to dangerous to ignore and every 3 games he gets to choose what goes on the high protected terrign which makes it almost impossible to reach with out some knights charging at you. |

With £40 to spend you could: Buy a box of Clan rats (then you have 2x30 units) and a Ratling gun to field with the second unit and have some change (never a bad thing). Alternatively wait until you have £10 more and buy a Battalion box for 40 CR, 2RO & a pack of giant rats which you can use and 20 PM you can either trade, field as 2x30 PM unis or convert into Censer bearers and still have 2x20 PM units. |
Currently joint first in PRS points, may as well blow my trumpet whilst I've got one.

First off, welcome to the Underempire. Avoid the shadows :ph43r: I'm going to 2nd previous comments and tell you to get more rats. Skaven are a horde army and as such you should match or outnumber the Goblins. I would agree to a Battalion box, it's a great deal and will help you plenty. Those extra monks can be converted into censer bearers, plague priests, packmasters, poisoned wind globadiers, and even Stormvermin. In 1000 point games I typically use: cheap Chieftain for Ld (he won't outfight most well equipped characters, but that extra point of Ld and added safety of not blowing up makes him woth it) Warlock Engineer (Storm daemon for magic insanity, dispel scroll for conservative play) 2 units of clanrats, 1-2 ratling guns 2 units of slaves GRats (fast flankers) Night Runners (screens, march blockers, war machine killers) Plague Monks (2 hand weapons, banner of burning hatred) Rat Ogres if you can spare points Gutter Runners (tunnelers destroy war machine crews) Plenty of horde, with some specialized choices to fill the gaps. Hope that helps, and welcome again. |

For 40 quid, two boxes of clanrats and a warlord would probably be the best allocation of funds. Skaven armies are not very effective without a solid base of clanrats and slaves, so it is best to get all the clanrat models you will need first (in your case a total of 90 clanrat/slave models), and then invest in support units. |
