I'm building a horde army with no giant rat packs in it. So after a million battalion boxes, I have a billion rats (well, over 150 at least ). So when our 7th ed book comes out, and there are no longer restrictions on numbers of swarms, will they be a viable option for 3000pt games (when there is not a lot of room on the table in a 2000pt game)? Simply put, will rat swarms be useful filler in high point games that leave little room for additional models? I think a great tactic would be to have a front row of slaves, second row of swarms, and a third row of clanrats. Slaves bait and flee; enemy overruns into swarms; clannies, magic and firepower mop up. |

Whilst it is indeed the trend that there is no more 0-1 restriction on units I would not say it's definite that Rat Swarms are going to stop being 0-1. (after all, the War Altar is still one per army!) Although, they used to be 0-1 because they were just that awesome, now they're not quiet so much so...
I can't see how this would feasibly work... If they run through the Slaves, and then get stuck against Rat Swarms, your clanrats wouldn't be able to reach them as they are still engaged with Rat Swarms! Rat Swarms have never been able to dish out much damage to regular units, in my experience, so the only thing that this would achieve is to hold up your army for a turn while they disperse the swarms. One thing that swarms can do very well at the moment is protect Weapon teams, Jezzails, Warplightning Cannons and lone characters. The enemy cannot charge them, because of the swarms in the way, but you can still shoot the enemy as per the "Small" rule. So, if you have points left over in a large game and are looking to add a little more protection to your Skryre branch, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Rat Swarms, but I just can't see them being useful for altogether too much else anytime soon. |

That is a fine idea! A five-base swarm protecting a warp-lightning cannon in a large point game...just the excuse I need to finally buy a cannon! The idea of a second line of swarms would be to angle the slaves so that the enemy would run into the swarms at an angle, thereby exposing the enemy's flank to the back row of clannies. I didn't explain the idea very well (and the idea could still suck anyway)! |
