I recently joined an army building league at a nearby Rogue Trader and decided to do a Dogs of War army. It's an idea I've been mulling over for a while, and my Army Diary can be found here. I've hashed out an army list and I'm just wondering if anyone on this board has any experience playing with or against a Dogs of War army, and would be able to be willing to give me pointers. 147pts - Mercenary General w/ Axe(sword) of Might, Enchanted Shield, Heavy Armour, Barded Steed 85pts - Paymaster w/ Light Armour, Brace of Pistols, Barded Steed 120pts - Mercenary Wizard w/ level 2, Dispel Scroll 120pts - Mercenary Wizard w/ level 2, Dispel Scroll 324pts - Ricco's Republican Guard (24) w/ heavy armour, pike, musician, standard, Ricco 266pts - Pikemen (23) w/ light armour, pike, full command 80pts - Crossbowmen (10) 80pts - Crossbowmen (10) 75pts - Light Cavalry (5) w/ bows 219pts - Voland's Venators (6) w/ lance, heavy armour, barded steeds, shield, standard, musician, Voland 56pts - Duellists (8) w/ Throwing Weapons 56pts - Duellists (8) w/ Throwing Weapons 200pts - Norse Marauders (20) w/ musician, champion, great weapons 85pts - Cannon 85pts - Cannon Total: 1998 points My question is that as the Pikes are primarily a defensive weapon, do I have enough "come hither" incentive between the 2 lvl 2's, the light cav, the cannons and the crossbowmen? Also, is ther enough "impact" units in the list, so that I don't have to rely on the units winning combat by themselves (though Ricco and Voland shouldn't have too many difficulties, 23 ASF hits + Ricco ,and 8 ws 4/5 st 6 hits with horses are both nasty). Also, how will this fare, in you opinion, with the nastier lists out there such as the dwarf/empire gunlines, the new VC's, bretonian lances, skaven hordes etc.? Skavenblight |

Thanks Scar, I'm never sure where to put lesser races army lists, I've seen them in General Discussion before so.... Anyways, good to hear Niz, I'm focussing more on fluff, but it would be nice to not get run over all the time :P. Skavenblight |

I'm not well versed on all these units, but it looks like you have a balanced army over all. A bit of magic, a bit of shooting, a bit of artillery, a bit of CC... I assume you are still planning to make the army more uniform than the normal DoW minis would allow. Looking forward to seeing this army come to life! Maybe for teh next UEGT Ottawa? (If there is one... )

Well, I haven't updated my Diary in a bit, but the army essentially comes down to 3 factions. The Mayenners, who are the heavily armoured elite combat units, the Two Rivers units who have light armour max, if that, in brown and green as foresters, and a third one, led by Masema the Prophet of the Dragon (the Norse Marauder Champion), who are religious fanatics in leathers that are worn down peasants. I'm using the Ricco's republican Guard models and Voland's Venator models for the Mayenners, the Rangers of the North models from the LotR range for the Two Rivers faction, and the Empire militia models for the Duellists and the Norse Marauders, Masema's faction. The two mages will be an Aes Sedai and an Asha'man, while each of the Cannons will actually be an Ashaman casting a firebolt which I will Greenstuff. The eventual Halfling Hot Pot will be a light catapault with an Aes Sedai touching the stone as if enchanting it. The only models I'm still uncertain of are the light cavalry, and it may come down to finding a handful of horses to convert the Rangers onto. All in all there will be three distinct factions and I'll use banners to distinguish them, except for Masema's rabble, which are ... rabble :P. A red hawk in flight on blue background in the Ricco's pikemen for Mayenne, A yellow banner with a black wolf's head with yellow eyes for perrin's personal banner in the Voland regiment and the Manetheren banner, which I'm currently looking for a description of, in the Two Rivers pikemen. All in all, it should be an interesting army to play. Skavenblight |

Well, I'm building my skaven army; but I've ALWAYS loved and played DoW! Rico's republican guard are a bit overpriced for what they can do. The extra points for the +1 WS, and the minor character of Ricco, are too excessive. Just take regular pikemen and give them the heavy armor upgrade. This should allow you to increase the number of pikemen you can field. If you want a named unit, go for Leopold's Leopard Company (immune to psychology is sooo much nicer!). THE most effective unit of DoW that I've ever used are the Marksmen of Miragliano. S 4, BS 4 with a 30" range is devastating! I really mean it. I run a unit on a hill of 12 to 14 and they FORCE your opponent to close with you and get into combat. They can also cut down enemy archers and gunners who often lack the same range as you (enemy shooting is the bane of your pikemen...that, and heavy cavalry). Two cannons is spot on good for an all-comers list. But should you face the mighty legions of the horned rat, Malakai Makaison's Goblin Hewer is an ungodly weapon. Since most dwarf players no longer field their slayer armies, you can usually find a goblin hewer on ebay. With Malakai at the controls, this thing hits on a 2+ just about anywhere on the board. It does D3, S4 hits PER RANK! I've used this weapon on a Black Orc unit of 30 models...and cut it in half in one round! I also made a chaos player cry when his chosen warriors were slaughtered on their way in, drawn out of formation by a fleeing light cavalry unit, and then hit with enfilading fire and wiped out (yes, a shot to the side of a unit count just like bolt throwers for determining "ranks"). Your army seems strongly themed, so this may not be an option. Sorry for the long post. Your list looks very good overall, so have fun with it! And remember: Plague Monks with spear heads on the end of their staffs make wicked looking pikemen! |

Thanks for the input, it's great to hear idea from people, theres a total lack of DoW experience where I am. I agree with you that Ricco's are slightly too expensive for what they do, but the +1ws increases their effectiveness dramatically. that's 8 wounds inflicted before armour as compared to 6 statistically against ws3 opponents. And against ws4 opponents, it means that they're hitting you on a 4 insead of a 3 which diminishes the number of wounds coming back your way, all for only 1 point on top of regular pikemen. I disagree with you entirely on the marksmen though. You can get 21 crossbowmen for the same cost as the 9+the character for significantly greater returns. With 21 ws3 st4 shots you'll inflict 6-7 wounds on average before armour saves, while with 9 ws4 st4 shots and one ws5 st4 shot, you'll only average around 3-4 wounds. I like the idea for the Hewer though, does it still take 2 rare slots? I think I can even find an idea to incorporate it into my theme .... Skavenblight |
