Re-reading the Skaven book, I noticed that there really wasn't all that much difference between a Packmaster and a Chieftain (aside from the points difference). As my army has reached 1000pts (assembled) I was wondering whether to have a Chieftain (less expensive, can take heavy armour + equivalent magic items) or Master Moulder (re-roll Moulder break tests within 6", Whip, more expensive)? I was leaning toward a Master Moulder (I have a few Rat Ogres and Giant Rats in my army), but overall, which do you think is the better general? |

The points you mentioned are the big differences. Chieftains can be tooled for decent combat ability and survivability, while the MM's role outside of its chieftainlike abilities is basically a benefit radius generator for your Moulder troops. Ifyou're fielding both, I'd say survivability is important for a general, while there is little within the MM's unique traits that require a general's position. |

As I've frequently mentioned before, I would always go with at least one chieftain for BSB purposes. Re-rolling break tests is nothing to sneeze at. I love the MM, dont get me wrong, but if you dont have at least 3 groups of moulder units, i just dont think hes worth it. Especially at this small point size, i dont think you'll be taking more than two units of giant rats and probably (or definitely) no rat ogres. But if you are planning on fielding him, i like to field him as a REALLY cheap character if im strapped for points (i usually employ a Grey Seer in larger battles). Just give him a great weapon (69 points!), plug him into the front rank of giant rats (i like 1-2 packs), and youre golden. with M6 all around, that MM can give your giant rats some added bite when flanking the enemy. Also, 3x WS5 S6 attacks on the charge is not something to be sneezed at! |

I like fielding the MM in smaller games but not as my general. Usually i run 1 unit of 3packs giant rats and 2 more units with 1 pack of giant rats. They go on the flank and run a moulder with a great weapon in the front rank of the 3 pack unit of course. Combined with a chieftan guarding your main lines you have a second mini general w/ movement 6 troops that can fly up the flank of an enemy. the small 1 pack units are there to crash into flanks while the bigger unit will hit the front. |
