Okay, the other day i had a game with my Skavne against some SAD goblins. Now one of the only units i managed to get into combat without being shot to peices by bowfires/shama/bolt thrower was gaint rats. When they got into combat after i attacked with the rats themselves i declared i was attacking with the packmasters on the back rank of gaint rats. Previously i've been playing whips can go through any number of gaint rat ranks, but they guy i was playing (and the two people behind him) all stated that in the new fantasy rules whips can only go through one rank like spears. Despite the fact in the Skaven army book it says (under the headline "Whip on page 32):
So what i'm wondering is if his and his friends claims to this rule being changed in the 7th ed. are true, or this was just another attempt to ensure he wins. So i'm just wondering if thers any truth about what he said (because it wasnt just him who claimed the change in rules for whips were true) |

I checked this with some people at Hobby supports and some tournament players... The general consensus was theu could fight in any number of ranks under issue 7. This is not a definitive answer because I don't think there is one... but 7 just says they fight in 1 less rank when you charge and Skaven book says they fight through any number of ranks... infinity - 1 = infinity... |

I would be inclined to agree with your side of the argument, seeing as how it does clearly state that whips can attack over any number of ranks of Giant Rats. I've seen no changes in spears from the last edition to this that would make his argument hold any sway. But if you want to beat him in this argument without too much hassle, you can always just put your packmasters in the second rank. *shrugs* Everybody's happy! |

As far as I know, the spear rules are the same... as are the rules in the Skaven army book... therefore their interaction should be the same, yes? Pillz |

(1) AFAIK, spear rules haven't changed in 7th edition. And there are no whip rules in the BRB. (2) Whether of not spear rules have changed is still irrelevant, as whips are not spears nor do they use spear rules. They just behave similar to spears, in the sense that they can attack over ranks. (3) Even if whips were spears, special rules in armybooks override the general rules. A whip's special rule is thus: it can attack over 1 rank of rat-ogres, it can attack over any number of ranks of giant-rats. There are no exceptions or differences that are specified. So they follow those special rules, and that's it. |
