Multiple choice poll, as a side note. Okay, wearing armour and having ward/regeneration saves is all well and good, but it really all comes down to who bothers to attack your characters. For example, in my gaming club, no standard Swordsman/Clanrat/Spearelf ever bothers to attack a fighty character, because it's generally regarded that they're alot harder to kill. I mean, they've got higher toughness, occasionally REALLY high WS and those saves mentioned earlier. Might as well just pick on the characters unit, since they're unlikely to be as tough. The character's assumed aura of invincibility protects him better than any suit of Heavy Armour. However, duels are all the rage around here, and heroes with Great Weapons almost ALWAYS go for other characters, when they have the chance. With S6, who wouldn't want to take a wack at a 4+ armour save T4 character? So yeah - back to the question - who actually bothers to attack your Warlord/Chieftains? |

Cavalry... Large-ish units of 'armed-to-the-teeth' heavy cavalry. For some reason, every army I've faced that had cavalry in it, saw it thundering straight at my general from turn 1 and usually eviscerating it as well. I don't know whether it's fate or just me having a hard time dealing with it, but that just remains to be the most-occuring foe for my characters. Greetz |

Best way outside of combat to kill characters is war machines ... hit that sucker enough times with weapons that do d3 / d6 wounds and they die rather quickly ... flame templates are excellent too ... Warplightning Cannons, Warpfire Throwers, and Brass Orbs ... mmm ... might as well give us a sniper rifle

Hochland Long Rifles! Curse you, Priests of Sigmar and your blasphemous re-roll inducing prayers! *shakes claw in general direction of a certain cheesy empire player* On a more serious note, my characters either get targetted by shooting (lone seers and warlock engineers) or are simply avoided (in the case of my plague priest). My bsb always leads from the back so he simply isn't targetable. My characters mostly die to miscasts/misfires or pursuing enemies after they lose a combat. I can't recall the last time when a character of mine was actually slain by the direct attacks of an enemy model (except for the hochland long rifles offcourse <_< ). @Vinz: Don't forget Warp Lightning Cannons .

i dunno if we're just being nice to each other round by where i game, but unless there's a character in the other unit, and even then a lot of the time if our char's are in a unit we don't bother hitting them. it just seems more right to hit the unit instead lol. the only time i ever get my guys to specifically hit characters instead of the surrounding units is when (playing as slaanesh) my khornate nemesis has his khorne chosen knights w/exalted on jugger in combat with my own nasty slaanesh chaos unit (usually slaaneshi chosen knights :P). in that case, the hero is just easier to kill (the jugger has a worse save and is more take downable than a chosen knight imo). i'll attack the mount, he doesn't have an onfoot model to show the exalted and so it's 2 birds one stone .i only ever do this against him because we're pretty good buds (so he won't take it the wrong way) and out of 4 games of his khornate chariot army lead by khorne bosses in chosen knights vs my balanced slaanesh army, i've won once

*shakes a fist*... Plain dumb luck, I tell you. Seriously, it never happened to me once in seven/ eight years of wargaming that a character got blasted into bits from a cannon shot. Hell, I even had a siege where my tower got targeted THREE times by a cannon and the cannon suffering a misfire every time it did. (Honestly, I guess that was compensation for being blasted to bits by that Tzeentch daemon army on the castle walls). Greetz |

Got to agree about never killing a caracte with shooting the 2+ look out sir combined with ward save makes it pretty tought. I still rember when my empire opponent always targeted my warlord with it's canon. During the second turn of a game he miss it's rebound but still mage to hit my warlord. I missed my look out sir. He was so happy :" I told you it would happen one day or another". Then he proceed to roll to wound...and get a 1 .My warlord as the nick name "Bullet catcher" since that day. |

Usually people prefer to dedicate their attacks against my Clanrats rather then my Master Moulders. When my charaters die it's usually the result of my unit breaking. Even the uber-characters go after the Clanrats too because they don't want to deal with Ward Saves or Regeneration taking away from combat result. After all Skaven are masters of static combat so other races need to generate wounds just to keep up and if your wasting attacks going after characters your going to lose the combat more than likely. Skaven characters tend to be defensively geared so in my experience most opponents tend to ignore them unless they're playing Brettonians, Blood Dragons, or some other race which is fond of issuing challenges. In that case decline with the Champion and let him hack at your character and not get any overkill. |

As yet, my Chieftan is the one doing the charging and thumping, not attracting the attention. Perhaps it is because my enemies don't have a choice about attacking him.. because he gets Skitterleaped right into some big boy to tear apart! |

Noone, as all Skaven leadership-giving characters should be placed in a rear rank. Simple enough explanation? |

The other day, my cheiftain was happily leading from the back, when a Tomb Scorpion emerged. Not close to my cautious general, but with scattering it surfaced in charging distance from the little NRunit watching the back of said cheiftain. Killed , broke and pursued.... right into little chiefie minding his own business. <_< Luckily enough, he survived first round, and with the aid of an assassin , I had to quick-reveal , they actually took down the scorp. But a nasty experience, even while staying behind, one can quickly be charged. |

I've only played smaller games, so ==My== Chiefy has to pull his weight and kill enemy rank and file. Typically this gets him a little too close to the enemy general (Wargor). But, in true Skaven-ey fashion I draw him and his unit in and with a combination of the Cautious Shield and flanking slaves I beat the unit in combat and run them down, much to the chagrin of ==My== brother. Meanwhile ==My== Engineer is frying his Bestigors. 3+ to kill with Warp Lightning? Hell yea! |

What attacks my warlord/chieftain specifically would have to be my opponants stronger characters. Usually I play against an Orc opponant so I get a Black Orc Boss charging towards him. However, what my leader fears the most would be fear itself. Many a game I've had where my squad with my leader in it gets charged by standard troops/a chariot/light calvery, only for me to fail my leadership roll and the squad to run off the table... after a repeated fail the next turn. Either that or being overrun by said troop types. |
