You know who is to blame in this? GW. If you lose money, do something about it. blaming everything else won't change the fact you're losing money. If you lose money, YOU have a problem. |

I get that prices will rise. Price fluctuation is a given in anything. It just seems that the prices rise in such a contrast to the items. The prices rise and the figure/points count in the box seems to drop. Shouldn't it really be only one of these? It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so obvious that this is all part of damage control over the LotR franchise. As most of you would know, GW has this veil of secrecy that surrounds the company, but even that can't hide the glowing red sore that this has produced. I'm not taking a higher ground, and I am not making judgments, but something has got to change over at GW. You can only blame external factors for so long. |

Having taken a look at some of their financial statements a few minor things jump out at me. The first thing is that their current financial liabilities has jumped 4.7 million pounds, and financing costs have jumped 300,000. Secondly, they would have made a profit if not for exceptional expenses incurred in assorted cost cutting programmes. Thirdly, US and Canada are running at a loss, while all other regions have a profit. Apparently, the regional branches have to 'pay' the production branch in their own currencies. Seeing as the US dollar has been falling and the pound has been rising, I wonder how much of an effect this has had on prices in the US. I'd actually like to know where all the pricing complaints have been coming from. Certainly, they've been boosting the prices everywhere, but quite possibly some areas more than others. The main thing to note is that sales have fallen, albeit only slightly. Compared to the fall in sales between 2004 and 2005 and 2005 and 2006, this fall in sales is very minor, but still constitutes a drop in sales. Sales have been falling in the Americas and Continental Europe, but rising in the UK and Asia Pacific. Independent retailers, which in particular form a large proportion of sales in Europe, have apparently been doing badly these last few years but have improved recently. I think the important issue is the fall in sales. Is this the continued dropoff in LotR sales, or has pricing gone past the sweet spot? Was the fall in independent retailers in years previous responsible, and the company is now beginning to recover? The data is understandably fairly vague about the details, so I wouldn't really be able to tell. It should be noted, however, that sales between 2002 and 2005 were significantly above trend, presumably fuelled by LotR. I also believe those years had very high profits. Unfortunately, there isn't very much data available on the years prior to those, so I can't compare them. Nevertheless, I don't think GW is going anywhere, and there are no indications of a change in heart by management. Incidentally, I recall that in the 2006 presentation they made the comment that independent gaming stores, especially in the US, were being laid waste to, and their thought was that computer games were squeezing them. This is probably the rationale behind the statement. |

actually where i play there are alot of lotr playing people but you are right. Most of them are sniveling little kids with pearents with deep pockets. and thats who i think warhammers directored to more to try and get the litle kids instead of looking after the more veteraned gamers, but i can see why they do that. most little kids will actually spend over 200 in one go buying the starter set and paints and everything at the start then lose interest. while the old gamers buy maybe a boxed set every 2 months or so on. but i also agree with mebob on the whole they arent trying. it seems to me that gamesworkshop cant be bothered setting out good fluff and so forth. if they want to impress their veterans they chould try a little harder i think. |
